UNITE joined forces with Kentucky State Police, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office, and the London Police Department to take drugs off the streets.

“This is a joint effort which is good, we get more resources involved this way than just the sheriff's office or city police or state police handling that on their own,” says Fred Yaden, Laurel County Sheriff.

“This round up is the result of several different kinds of investigations into meth labs, the precursers for meth labs and also the street sales for other pharmaceuticals and other types of drugs,” says Joel Cunigan of Operation UNITE.

More than two dozen officers split into teams to better cover the county.

“This was a drug sting that's been set up, it's been several months in the making we hoped to round up more of them up, but that does not mean it's over,” says Sheriff Yaden.

All of the arrests were made after undercover officers bought drugs from suspected dealers. Police say while the number of meth labs have dropped statewide, it's still a big problem in Laurel County.

“This is one of the counties that we see a lot more of the methamphetamines, than in some of the others areas of eastern Kentucky and so that's what a lot of this round-up is focused at," says Cunigan.

Rather than large-scale meth labs, Sheriff Yaden says he's seen more of what he calls "mom and pop" operations.

“The meth problem is not gone by any stretch of the imagination. It's very prevalent here in Laurel County,” Yaden says.
