A bill recently approved by Congress cut nearly 70% of funds awarded to law enforcement agencies across the state. For many, that money is the primary source of funding for drug enforcement operations.
Officials at the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet say if this bill passes, it will be detrimental to drug enforcement efforts across Kentucky.
For one drug task force in Somerset, keeping drugs off the street is their primary goal, but the Lake Cumberland Area Drug Task Force receives 75% of their funding from the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant, or JAG program, a grant that was just slashed by Congress.
Last year, the federal government awarded nearly two point five million dollars to law enforcement agencies in Kentucky through the JAG program. For many drug task force agencies in Kentucky, it's the primary source of their budget and with funding cut, officials say it will devastate drug enforcement across Kentucky.
"So what we anticipate is statewide there will be some drug task forces probably will go out of business," said Tommy Loving with the Kentucky Narcotic Officer Association.
The grant money also funds drug prevention, offender re-entry, and after-school programs, all of which will likely struggle from the cuts.
President Bush is expected to sign the bill later this week.

I guess they are upset considering all of the corruption within the county and city police and sherrifs departments. They may make busts but they also divy up a portion of drugs and money among other booty then they turn in the rest it is a well known fact in Pulaski county that law enforcement when it comes to drugs are citing people for the same things that they are doing themselves
they got to have the money for iraq..u no they come before the americans do. ever time something good happends .they stop it.what a pity. drug laws was working good now it comes to a end.owell
This is a huge mistake. We're just beginning to see a dent put in some of the larger drug operations. Once the pressure's off, it'll be back to business as usual.
