Hundreds of people gathered Sunday to say goodbye to a Bell County Sheriff's deputy and his K-9 companion who both died during a police chase early Thursday morning.

Hundreds of officers from across the region came to pay tribute to Deputy Sean Pursifull. He's described as deeply devoted to his life as a deputy and as a good friend to those who needed him. He is also known for protecting people right up to the very end.

"Had that pursuit not stopped with Sean, it may have stopped with one of our children. If you asked Sean right now, he'd rather it would have stopped with him," said Rev. David Peters.

"This community has lost a really wonderful person and a caring spirit," said Sherry Cornett.

Deputy Sean Pursifull and his K-9 "King" were laid to rest side by side at a family cemetery in Bell County.

People from across the region gathered to honor Deputy Pursifull Sunday. One group says their mission is to show support to those who serve and Sunday, they showed their appreciation and respect for Deputy Pursifull.

They call themselves the Patriot Riders. Whether it's welcoming home a soldier or honoring a fallen hero, rain or shine, they'll be there. Tom Epperly remembers the appreciation he received when coming home from Iraq and now it's his turn to return the favor, this time to Deputy Sean Pursifull and his family.

"I think it gives them a tremendous amount of comfort, just to let them know that people out there care," Epperly said.

And in addition to the Riders and the human officers, most of the Knox County, Tennessee K-9 Unit also showed up to pay their respects to Deputy Pursifull and his K-9 companion King. No matter where they're from, for most of the officers, Deputy Pursiful's death truly hits home because they know, it could have been any one of them. It was Sunday's outpouring of support that lets every officer know that friends and even complete strangers are here to support them in the important job they do.

"In that profession, they keep all of us safe, and to show them some sort of tribute is very necessary," said Steve Verrigni with the Patriot Riders.

The Patriot Riders say they only show up if they're invited by friends or family. They also came to welcome home the Mountain Warriors this past fall.

WYMT's Jeff Allen attended the funeral. To watch his report, click the video link above.

Sean will be in our hearts always. He was always there when we called him. My hearts goes out to his Mom, girls and unborn son that will carry his name on. He was so proud to have King by his side. They had to leave here together because it would have been to hard for either one of them without the other. A piece of my heart left when I got the phone call telling me what had happened. Sean I will miss you forever. Love always

Sean was a great cop, dad, and friend. Everyone respected Sean because he helped our community out. He will always be remembered by everyone. My prayers go out to his family especially his two little girls. Sean and his partner King were the best thing for this community but nothing to worry about because they are together up in Heaven. We all miss you deputy Pursifull. We will see you again one day.

I didnt know sean personally but, dad accidently called the wrong number about two or three days before that and it was sean, he called back...its hard to believe that quick something can happen but, there is one thing that is for sure and that is that he is trully respected. It happened right above my house and i came through there a few hours before that...I am thankfull for all you men and women out there putting your life on the line as sean did just to protect us...If only people would do the right thing, its not too hard..

Last Call In SE KY, a Sheriff's patrol car sits on a small hillside, overlooking the burial site... The Bell County Sheriff's Dispatcher is heard on the car radio loudspeakers, while hundreds stand in silent respect: "Bell County Dispatch 409..." "Bell County Dispatch 4-zero-9..." "This is the last call for Bell County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Pursifull and K-9 Unit King." "You and King have served the citizens of Bell County with pride, integrity and distinction." "It is now time for 409 and 409-1/2 to go 10-7. We are going to truly miss you and King." "Bell County Dispatch now clear."

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Deputy Pursifull's wife and daughters. We are deeply sadden of the tragic events that happened on that early morning. I know in my heart that he did not intentionally try to hurt your husband and father along with King. Please accept our deepest sympathies. Uncle and family.

Sean was a wonderful man and a hero to all. To everyone the next time you see an officer stop and say Thank you for all their service. To the family I will always keep you in my prayers. Try to find some peace in knowing that Sean is at home with the Lord.

Today was a very sad day for Pineville, Bell County and surrounding cities and counties. I wasn't able to attend the service because I had to work but when I was driving to work, I had to pass Bell Co. High School where the funeral took place and it was very sad. Then a few miles on down the road, I met, I think I counted 17 police cars from Tazewell and New Tazewell TN going to the funeral and all of them had their blue lights on and I along with everyone else on the road pulled to the side of the road to show my respect. A friend and co-worker was traveling a short distance in front of me and we were talking on our cell phones and she was telling me what I was getting ready to see and she started crying and then when I saw all those police cars, I could not hold the tears back. It was so sad. People really do care. Pineville is a small town and if you don't know everyone personally, you at least know something about them and I have always heard good things about Sean. God Bless him

My thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Pursiful's family and friends. My husband is also a deputy and I thank God each and every night when he comes home safe because in this day and time you never know. To his family know in your heart that Sean and King will be watching over you each and every day until one day you will meet again. Again my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

what is happening to our youth today? no supervision, overworked parents, broken homes. a child not taught values, morals, respect etc. it begins at home! What are you teaching your children?

You stand out on the corner ignoring the insults and the stares, close to the point of believing that no one really cares, when a six year-old boy walks over after watching you for awhile, reaching out to shake your hand, on his face a friendly smile. To him you are a hero, a protector of our land, and he wants to learn about you, as a cop and as a man. And when he asks you why your badge is covered by a black elastic band, tell him about our Brother A cop who made a stand.

I think this is just fabulous that these comrades and the canine units are paying the respect to SEAN and his family.. this should warm the hearts of everyone . GOD bless the family of this one left behind.... My heart and prayers go out to each and everyone that knew Sean..GOD BLESS

There were so many people there tonight to support Sean's family and to show their respects. King was right there beside Sean like always. My tears flowed as I enter the actual room, after waiting for an hour outside where it was getting cold. You passed King's casket, where an officer was on watch with a K-9 there beside him. Then to see the honor guard there silent, respectfully...words can't describe. And then as you approach Sean's casket there stands one of his daughters. To see that little girl, hug her and try to offer words of comfort...I couldn't. What do you say to a child who has just lost her Daddy? She was so brave though. There by her Daddy's side greeting hundreds of people as they passed. God be with that family especially those little girls and also his unborn son.
