A new Southeastern Kentucky high school will open its doors this fall. Today we introduce you to the man who will take the reigns at the new Harlan County High School.
"Your mind's just buzzing every day with all the, we need to do this, we need to do that," said Bob Howard.
Evarts Principal Bob Howard says he has so many ideas for his upcoming role as principal of the new Harlan County High School that some nights he can't sleep.
"To me, he has all the qualities that you look for in a professional educator," said Harlan County Superintendent Tim Saylor.
One is more than 20 years of experience combined as a teacher, coach, and administrator.
"I have kind of like a five and five plan that I work at my school now, I'm in five classrooms a day, and I write down five things I want corrected tomorrow," Howard said.
Howard says he's hands-on about meeting each of his goals.
"If a club is meeting, I want to be sitting there. If the prom's being directed, I want to be in there hanging wires," Howard said. "You have to be there so that people know, and the kids know that you're a part of their experience".
Howard wants to make sure there's a sense of unity among students coming from Cawood, Cumberland, and his native Evarts High School.
"He understands our people, he understands the background, and the issues that face our students and our parents here in Harlan County, and I think that is very critical," Saylor said.
Howard says the possibilities here are endless.
"I can't wait to see how this is all gonna work," Howard said.
Howard will carry out his duties as Evarts High School principal through the end of this school year and will make the transition to the new school this summer.
