Several Eastern Kentucky teens are saying no to sex before marriage. Saturday night, they joined over tens of thousands of other young people across the county who already made the promise.
It was not your typical high school health class about sex education. With the help of young performers, more than 500 people promised to wait until marriage to have sex.
"We tell them the truth, we tell them hey, it's not easy and we just want to implement that we're there to support them 100 percent," said Nicole Baca, Silver Ring Thing Performer.
The Silver Ring Thing also tells teens that it is not too late to make the choice to start over.
"You can put on a ring tonight and say from this day on, I'm going to wait for my future husband or future wife," said Jeff Sitera.
Performers share their own stories of premarital sex, rape, STD's and their choice to wait.
"The kids are so casual about sexual encounters, it's just their way of life, they don't think anything of it. It seems like no body is out there explaining to them why it is important for them to wait," said Beth Howard.
"The society today has got them going in the wrong direction we believe, that this will help to instill the values and support what we're already doing at home," said David King.
The program also uses a faith and strength in God to support the choice to wait. Some say the fear of pregnancy or STD's is not always enough to abstain from sex.
"I think abstinence is so important because so many youth of our nation are wasting away their innocence, and I think God is a good light to shine," said Matt Roop.
And more than 500 young people decided they are worth the wait.
At the end of the three hour event, participants got a silver ring as a reminder and symbol of their promise to abstain from sex until marriage.
