WYMT has learned that Jim Holbert, a Laurel County resident, has announced his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Kentucky's 5th Congressional District, the seat currently held by Hal Rogers. Holbert is running as an Independent and calls his campaign "a true grassroots effort."

"Our Country is in a bad way at home and overseas and needs common-sense action from Congress, not more political arguments or 'business as usual.' We need laws made and upheld to protect and help our working people and bring good jobs back to America. The 5th District has the right resources, and with the right policies we can bring energy production and manufacturing jobs here and still ensure the protection of our land, air, and water," Holbert said.

Holbert, a former U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard pilot, settled with his family in Laurel County in 2005, where he works from the London- Corbin Airport as an Emergency Medical Services helicopter pilot flying critically ill and injured persons in southeast Kentucky.

He and Cindy, his wife of 33 years, have three grown children and one grandchild.

How does Holbert feel about the I-66 debacle? If he could bury the whole idea, great! He next can remove Hal Rogers' meglomaniac name off the Daniel Boone Parkway and restore Boone's name to it. With our thanks, we'll name a helicopter lane The Jim Holbert Air Lane to Happieness.

I agree there needs to be some common people in elected positions of this state. The question being will he stay common or do the political way of life"forget what he promises and let big wigs money do the talking for him"This is a way of life for the politicans.Look at the difference in the school systems in south eastern Ky.Good old Hal is big buddies with Lonnie Anderson, while Knox County is left in the dark.Whitley County will fight tooth and toe nail to keep these people in there, because Mr.Anderson is a politian too.The other schools needs to have him checked out or demand some of the same money to back their school systems.People he has grant writers on his payroll does Knox County, how about Laurel County.

Hats off to Mr. Holbert. I hope he wins big. Rogers is OLD SCHOOL, been there for too long. If Holbert really wants to win, promise to restore Daniel Boone's name to the parkway and you'll get if for sure. Good luck taking out the trash.

He is wasting time and money on this. As long as Hal is alive, he will maintain this position.
