A half dozen fire departments received an early morning call to a Perry County lumber plant. A fire broke out at the Trus Joist plant around two Friday morning. The company's own emergency response system kicked in, but other departments were needed to help fight the flames.

Fire crews say flames shot through the roof during the early morning.

"Fortunately there were no injuries. We are very pleased from that aspect. Certainly our first and foremost priority is the safety of the employees," said Monte Simpson, Public Affairs Manager for Weyerhaeuser.

Fire crews left the scene just before 5:30 and though the fire is out, Trus Joist officials are still trying to figure out exactly how the fire started.

"Hopefully in the near future, we'll know exactly what happened and the cause of it and we can put extra precautions in place to avoid that in the future," Simpson said.

Trus Joist is prepared for small fires with their own fire brigade on site, but once a fire is out of their control, they call for back up.

"What happens when they have a fire out there, their fire brigade does the initial attack on the fire and if it gets out of control, we go in and assist them," said Hazard Fire Department Chief Sam Stacy.

With out the brigade, officials are unsure how far the fire could have spread.

"They are trained especially towards a fire in the manufacturing industry. That's just what they do," Stacy said.

Officials say Trus Joist is investigating the cause of the fire within their own company.
