Many people in Middlesboro probably remember what they were doing 20 years ago Friday.

A little after nine o’clock on May 9th, 1988, a devastating tornado touched down two miles west of Middlesboro killing one person and injuring others. The twister also cut a 500 yard wide path through the downtown area damaging buildings, tossing vehicles, and ripping down power poles.

Kentucky Governor Wallace Wilkinson later toured the hardest hit areas.

The damage was estimated at more than 22 million dollars.

The day had been full of Storm Warnings but not more that 30 mins after the warnings had been lifted the Tornado hit Middlesboro and left some of the oldest buildings in piles on Cumberland Ave and other side streets. The Callison’s Jewelry and Furniture Store was one of the oldest buildings and it was gone. Several other buildings lost roofs and windows but were able to return to business but Callison’s was gone forever..
