This is the 18th Mother's Day a Bell County woman has lived without her daughter who was murdered in 1990. It's still not known who killed 21 year old Jennifer Bailey and why. WYMT's Steve Hensley talked to Janice Bailey about her daughter and another painful loss earlier this year.
On August 16th, 1990, 21 year old Jennifer Bailey went to Pine Mountain State Park to go jogging and never returned. Her mother immediately feared the worst.
"Something like a sledge hammer hit me in the chest and I started screaming and crying and I knew something happened to Jennifer," Janice said.
Several days later, Bailey's body was found over a bluff about a mile and a half from where her car was parked at the entrance to the park. She'd been strangled to death.
"I think she was abducted right there on the side of 25-E and taken back in that mountain and murdered," Janice said.
Janice Bailey says she now has no hope the case will be solved and feels like police should be doing more.
"After 18 years, they ain't done nothing and won't even talk to you about it. How can you have any hope," Janice said.
A memorial to Jennifer was built at the Pine Mountain State Park and she is buried next to her father. Elbert Bailey died in January not knowing who killed his daughter but he told us back in 1995 that he was already looking forward to seeing Jennifer again.
"She's in a better place than this anyhow. She's gone to Heaven and I'm going to meet her one of these days," Elbert said in the 1995 interview.
"I believe they're together, walking the streets of gold, just like the bible says," Janice said.
Bailey says as she watched her husband die, the fear and hurt left his face and he looked like a young man again.
"I said that Saturday morning he died, it must have been a wonderful reunion for them. I wish I could've went too," Janice said.
Janice Bailey is now left alone in her house wondering if she'll ever find out what happened to her daughter before she dies.
"I'd give anything in the world to see whoever did that to her put away, anything," she said.
There is still a $10,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction in this case. If you have any information about the murder of Jennifer Bailey, call the state police post in Harlan at 606-573-3131.
