Soaring oil prices drive gas costs up even more across the country.

Lawmakers in Washington questioned oil company executives about the record profits in light of a struggling economy.

In the past 12 months, crude oil has doubled in price and drivers are in sticker shock.

The national average at the gas pump is a record 3.81 a gallon a 19 percent spike over last year.

Prices have shot above four dollars a gallon in parts of Pike County and they're around $3.90 in most of the region.

WYMT's Dara Rees talked to one Perry County gas station owner who says he's turning off his pumps until prices drop.

As gas prices edge closer and closer to the four dollar mark, some say they've had enough, including the owner of the Bubby Combs BP Station.

Combs says he doesn't want to see his customers paying an arm and a leg for his gasoline, so he says he's stopped selling gas until the prices go down.

BP Owner and Perry County Magistrate Bubby Combs says he stopped selling gas when it hit $3.75.

“It's just hard on people paying this price and a lot of people kept buying gas from me, I know they couldn't afford to pay the price, but they were doing it just as a friend. I figure if I quit selling gas they can go to Smitty's or Wal-Mart or somewhere they can get a good price,” Combs said.

Though many of his customers don't seem to mind!

“I really don't blame him. Gas prices are ridiculous and people can't afford it,” Candice Combs said.

Customers say they are proud that Combs is making a stand against the high gas prices.

They say they don't want to pay the high prices either, but now they have to find somewhere else to go fill up.

Combs says he still sees a lot of customers coming to his store, most of them having to cut back on their own due to the rising costs.

“All my money goes to gas I can't afford anything else. It takes every penny I have just to get around,” Candice Combs said.

“People always bought off of Bubby because they liked him, but if he can't make no money, he can't sell it,” J.W. Hurt said.

“That's what we need to do, quit selling gas, maybe we'll get everybody to bring it down some,” Bubby Combs said.

Until the prices go down, some say they would rather saddle up than pay the price.
Bubby Combs says he will consider selling gas again when he can sell it for less than $3.50 per gallon.

If more gas stations shut down, would this be be more effective then people boycotting and not buying gas?

I wonder when the truth comes out as to why he really had to stop selling gas, will the tv do a story on that. when I read these comments (write him in as president) I laugh because this is a true media story, everyone in this area know the truth, it's funny how a news story can make a hero!

When I bought the Hazard-Herald Wednesday morning and first read this story, I wanted to go and personally shake Mr. Combs hand for refusing to sell gas and put any more money in George Bush's pocket. I think the nation should go on strike by refusing to go to work, shopping, or anything that isn't an emergency for about a week or until the prices come down. If they're not selling any gas the demand will be down so they will have to bring the prices down too. It will take everyone coming together and refusing to buy gas in order to fight this. I'm willing to take some days off for the good of the country.

Hey, it's about time someone took a stand for the working people. It seems no one else cares about us. It's not election time for, so who cares about our votes. Lets remember this when they want our votes in a year or two. I guess they get a gas card and don't have to buy their gas.

Good job and we appreciate it, were you buying your gas from that Whitesburg fellow? if so then that might also be a good reason to switch to another supplier.

Good for you Mr. Combs!! If all the independent owners would do like you and force to oil companies into reality, we may see prices go down..

Hay Bubby you are a true American and i would love to see this happen in other areas. Maybe we can write your name on the November Ballot for President nobody else is willing to stand up and be counted. MAY GOD BLESS YOU !

A couple of things people can do to bring the prices down. Stop buying from the MAJOR companies, Exxon and Moble. Combine as many tasks as possible when going out. When the 2 major companies do not sale as much gas and when people start to realize this, then the prices will come down. Not only will the gasoline prices decrease, so will most all other prices that seems to rise more and more. PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE A STAND AGAINST THE HIGH PRICES OF GASOLINE. BAND TOGETHER PEOPLE AND FORCE THE PRICES DOWN.

did you notice the price for regular on the price sign? $2.1_, how long has it been the he stopped selling gas? I drive by this location several times a day, this price has not been changed in a long time even when his gas retailed for more than $3 a gallon. I thought ky had a law that retailers had to have the correct price posted for the product that they are selling. but everyone knows what Bubby Combs has gotten by with so why should this be any different, what goes around comes around!
