We have new information about an ATV accident in Pike County late Sunday afternoon.

It happened on Blairview Road in the Virgie area.

Police say a 12 year old and a 13 year old were riding along railroad tracks when they lost control of the ATV and it went off the Gravel Road into a creek.

Both children were taken to Pikeville Medical Center.

12 year old Sarah Colley died at the hospital last night.

A separate ATV accident in Floyd County claims another young life this holiday weekend.

It happened Saturday just off Kentucky highway 850 in Hippo.

Police say the ATV hit a bump in the road and flipped over.

The 17-year-old passenger, Briana Castle, was flown to St. Mary's Hospital where she died Sunday afternoon.

The 17-year-old driver was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

A third ATV accident and a bicycle-train collision, both in Harlan County, killed two other young people this weekend.

Yeah, the family is reading this. We wanted to be able to keep the paper articles as momentos...these are some really hurtful things. Pray for our family, Sara was such a beautiful and loving child, we miss her so much.

Allie, they may not personally read this website but what about the kids that went to school with Sara and her brother, they are posting on here as well and they have to read this. They are 11 - 14 year old children and what if the brother happens to get on here after all of his friends tell him they have posted things for him and his sister. How do you think that will make him feel. As for the question about the other child, that was not her brother, it was her biological mother's boyfriends son.

Posted by: Allie on May 28, 2008 at 07:30 PM
To those of you saying these comments will hurt the family, do you really think they are spending their time reading a website right after their kid died? Get real!

The colley family is in my prayers. I knew the dad and the step-mother,both of them loved Sara.I heard the 13 year old boy was her brother.Does anyone know if he is ok or not?It was a big lost ,but people don't blame the parents for what happen. It was an accident and they lost their daughter and have to live without her ,so they don't need other peoples opion their hearts are empty>I pray that everyone's heart will heal and that a law will be passed on atv and childern.

R.I.P Brianna Castle. we will always love andmiss u.. what the news didnt tell u: Brianna didnt have one broken bone or cut on her. the only thing that killed her was the head trama. if she would have been wearing a helmet she could have walked away.WEAR HELMETS. they give u a extra life

Sara's family does not deserve all of the ridicule. She was actually visiting her biological mother when this happened and her dad and stepmom are devastated. This may be a place to "post your comments" but were you not taught to respect other's feelings. This family has been devastated and they do not need to see negative comments on here. Put yourself in their shoes and think about how you would feel. Anytime a parent loses a child they always blame themselves thinking they could have done something different, but they cannot, GOD has a plan for everyone!!!

Strange i didnt know atvs had seat belts, must be a new thing out lol.there are to many people getting killed on atvs..any where you look now days there atvs on state and county road,,they need to be home riding where they belong not all over the place

As a trauma nurse, we call the warm weather 'trauma season' for a reason. There is not a single day that we receive less than 4-5 ATV accident victims, mostly flown or driven in from Eastern KY. And they all say the same thing, "its a just a one time freak accident"...that is-if they are even talking. Everyone thinks each accident is isolated, yet we get to see the same thing day after day. No helmets and alcohol are big factors, but even without those, major injuries and deaths still occur way too much. Adults have enough accidents, let alone the children. PPL say the ATV itself isn't the cause, but why is it we get the most traumas from them? Yes there are car wrecks too, but at least cars have a protective barrier around the occupants. Same thing with motorcycles...more accidents than cars. (Don't believe me? Ask any ER nurse in KY Less than 5% of accidents/deaths actually make it to the news.) Its a sad sad sight to see all these preventable injuries and deaths happen everyday.

I had a friend once tell me that intelligent people created ATVs to get rid of the stupid people. He may have been on to something. Also, for those of you telling people to keep their rude comments to themselves, please realize this IS NOT Legacy.com. The three words above clearly state "Post Your Comments" not leave your words of sympathy. One other thing; I wish some of you would take the money you were going to spend on an ATV and spend it on spelling lessons. I have never seen so many people spell so many words incorrectly in my life. Punctuation and grammar doesn't seem to exist either. If people from other states read this board (which I know they do), it doesn't set a good example for the people they already view as uneducated and extremely backwards. If you aren't going to give them a good reason for not calling you backwards, they will continue to call you that name plus others. At least learn how to use spell check.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Colley family during their time of loss. May God comfort you during your loss and help through the days following. Just remember you have many people praying for you!!

Sorry this happened to theses kids God bless them. Also having kids that ride Atvs 4yr an 6yr olds i have no problem with their ridding one.You got to have a limit to where they ride and HOW they ride!Dont buy 1 and just let them go on them thats crazy its asking for trouble.Ive been riding over 20 yrs and have wrecked by my own stupidty no ones fault but mine.Atvs are 1 of the best ways to get out and have a good day of family fun but you got to use common sense stay off the roads[more idiots driving cars than ATVS] AND WEAR A HELMET! Dont ride more than your skill level. Again GOD BLESS theses kids and their families our prayers are with you. And people ride safe sling mud have fun and get home safe

I would just like to say, you cannot blame the parents on this. Coming from a family where I had strict rules enforced every day, I still broke them as a teen. KIDS WILL BE KIDS. It doesnt matter how much these parents told their kids not to go 4 wheeling or whatever they probably lied and went anyway. The parents cant be there 24-7...and no matter what the parents tell the kids not to do they will go do it anyway behind their backs so dont blame the moms and dads!

My Heart Goes out to the Colley Family & the Maynard family; and also the Castle family. These were tragic accidents. May God Give you all the strength you need to get through this; for he is the only one that u can lean on in times of these. Your all in my thoughts and Prayers.

well first of all it is not the atv to blame. And all that should matter saras family right now because I know they are going through a hard time and sara was one of my friends

Posted by: Jerri Location: Southeastern Ky on May 27, 2008 at 06:44 PM
My thoughts and prayers are with all the families who have lost these beautiful children. I know you are hurting and no one can feel that pain unless they have gone through it. God Bless you all. Lynn, in Pikeville, my mother laid awake many times because she was aggrevated with the noise of dirt bikes and quad runner four wheelers and begged us to have them quit. She was in her last days before she died. My mother was a strong woman and never complained about anyone or anything until she became very ill. That was a nasty statement you made about senior citizens. It will be on you sooner than you think, we can't all stay young. Aging is a process we all must face.

Parents and friends of these special angels, please try to over look the harshness of these self centered people that has no compassion.Thier should be asupport group in your area or the members of your Church can and will help you through the rough times in the next while. Some days will be rougher than others but it will get easier in time.It will help to talk about it in your own time.

Sara was one of the sweetest children you could ever meet. She always had a smile on her face that would light up an entire room. She was an intelligent child and very friendly. This is not the time to blame parents, first of all they are going through a horrible time that no parent should have to go through. They lost their only daughter and not only are they trying to comfort each other, they are trying to comfort the 2 boys. Everyone has an opinion on everything but don't broadcast it on here so they will have to feel even worse. They do not deserve this! Noone does, I would not wish this on my worst enemy! Let this family heal, do not make them deal with all the negative comments. People need to focus on their feelings and keeping Sara and the entire Colley family in your thoughts and prayers. They need all the encouragement and prayers everyone could possibly give them. They loved Sara dearly. Sara had a wonderful dad, stepmom, brother and stepbrother that need to heal

Nothing in the news was ever said about Sara wearing a seatbelt. her family has my deepest sympathy. But why does everyone keep blaming it on the atv? There has been more accidents and deaths reported in cars than with atv's, but that don't mean we have to change the laws on driving them. Does it? I sure didn't think so. And there's so many deaths involving motorcylcle, but you don't see anyone raising a fuss on changing laws with them. And I don't think that's right. If people should have to wear helmets while riding an atv, then it should also be the law for anyone riding a motorcycle to have to wear a helmet. And if their caught not wearing one then they should have their bike taken from them plus a fine. Some may see this as not right, but it's being said that if a child is riding an atv then it should be taken. So, I do think it's all fair. What law goes for one motorized vehicle, wether being an atv, car, or a motorcycle, should be enfored on all of them. don't blame one.

You people are very disrespectful I bet your children are self centered people to.These comments on parenting doesn't belong here in this spot.My thoughts are with these parents.I can't imagine my life without one of my two boys. Please try to find a support group to help you guys through the roughest times. The rest of you people go to another comments area to post your hatefulness about this subject.Don't hurt the families and friends of these children anymore. If you live in a glass house don't throw any stones. No one raises thier children the way our parents did.We always want better for them.

Alright I didnt know any of the kids that got kill. I feel for the familys Ive rode fourwheelers all my life yes you can get hurt or killed but people if havent rode one dont be running down the sport we love riding thats why we do it some wear helmets some dont its our choice love it or hate it. Again my prayers go out for the families.

CAR WRECKS HAVE TAKEN MANY LIVES ALSO, SHOULD WE ALL STOP DRIVING??..AND AS FOR THE NOISE AND AGGREVATION SOME SENIOR CITIZENS WOULD COMPLAIN ABOUT ANYTHING THAT DOESN'T FIT THEIR NEEDS..SIMPLE AS THAT......MY PRAYERS GOES OUT TO THE FAMILIES OF ATV ACCIDENTS AND ALSO CAR WRECK VICTIMS. MAY GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.

Posted by: safe 4 wheeler Location: Pikeville on May 27, 2008 at 01:50 PM
Here we go again blaming the 4 wheeler. If OPERATED PROPERLY they will NOT KILL YOU. No child should ever be allowed to drive one...they can't drive a car and the same should go for atv's. If a child is seen driving one it should be took from the owner. Most adults have enough maturity about them to operate one SAFELY! STOP BLAMING THE ATV...

Posted by: A MOTHER Location: OWINGSVILLE on May 27, 2008 at 01:41 PM
Again, everyone is looking to blame the ATVs. The problem is the parents allowing their children to make the wrong decision. There are alot of responsible people that rely on ATVs for their work (farmers, linemen for electric and cable companies, etc.). Parents today want to give their kids too many material things and too much freedom. This didn't happen when I was 12 and 13 because I was still riding a bike!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Vigie on May 27, 2008 at 01:39 PM
This was one of those freak accidents that happened to Sara. They had rode the 4wheeler all day without problems and then they got stuck in some gravels. When Sara Unbuckled her seatbelt (which she was wearing) and shifted her weight it caused the 4wheeler to tip over. This was not a case of children riding reckless or anything no hills or such just a accident. In stead of putting blame on parents you should be praying for them. I can not imagine losing a child. Sara was a beautiful girl with a smile on her face at all time. She went to GFJ Elem. for awhile and I know that the children and staff there are really sad over this. Please pray for her family

i hope the family of sarah colley r doing well i am so sorry for your loss i hope you read these it might make you fill better i will alway's miss her and was a good girl.

I know the parents of one of the kids killed this week-end. I can only pray that none of you "holier-than-thou" folks on here never have to go through what these people are right now. This child died as a result of an ACCIDENT. We cannot hold our children's hand every second of every day to keep them from harm's way. This family is shattered at the loss of their child and I know either would gladly take it's place if they could. I'm not even sure if they'll make it through all of this. I can only pray for them and hope they don't see some of these heartless comments that have been posted here.

Posted by: brad Location: inez on May 27, 2008 at 12:38 PM
I understand some of the anger and frustration expressed by other folks on this website but I still can't understand why any responsible parent would hand a death machine to a child and I also don't understand why law enforcement just smile and wave when they meet these violaters on public roads(I understand that the law states that they can cross a public road traveling that road by a maximum of 2 tenths of a mile). Why are the laws being ignored?

Posted by: Concerned Citizen Location: Harlan, Kentucky on May 27, 2008 at 12:05 PM
My heart aches with the news of these young people losing their lives over the weekend. There has got to be some controll over these ATVs and enforceing the laws to make sure these young people will use good judgement when riding them. Anyone under eighteen years old should not even be allowed to operate these vehicles. Here in Harlan County and some of the surrounding counties it is all tourism. Law enforcement have their hands full with all the calls that come in complaining about ATVs. Most of these that are riding these dirt bikes and four wheelers are no more than 6 years old to 12 years old. We have got to complain to our law makers and law officials to put a stop to this. Please write your represenative and call your congressman to enforce more laws concerning this. The summer has just begun and how many more headlines of ATV tragidies are we gona have to read? Not only the children are getting hurt, but our senior citizens are having to endure the noise and aggrevation.

Posted by: JR Location: shelby on May 27, 2008 at 07:53 AM
Instead of stepping in to blame the parents for something they may or may not have had control over, lets stop and show some compassion for these people who just lost a child!!! These people you crticize have just had their world turned upside down and lost one of the most important things to them....a child. So before you start to say something negative about these parents stop and think it may be your child next time.

Posted by: jennifer Location: vicco on May 27, 2008 at 07:20 AM
Blacktop and ATV's were not designed for each other and if the current laws were enforced then the death rates would drop like a rock. Also the reckless parents need to be held accountable by the courts for allowing their children in such harms way.

Posted by: rick Location: eastern on May 27, 2008 at 05:45 AM
i think its the parents who are to blame for number 1 buying the motorcycles and fourwheelers and number 2 no supervision on theme when they are ridding them i get so tired of hearing off all these nonsexe deaths on a t v..ss we need more and strictor guidelines on theme i think and that might solve the problem if they had to pay a tags and tx fee on them to

So sad.I am Vietnam veteran and I think 4 wheelers have killed more than the Vietnam war

Posted by: tracy Location: betsy layne on May 27, 2008 at 05:01 AM
omg stop letting kids do whatever they want to do.they are not the adults .we are parents for a (edited) reason .now if ppl dont think this is a problem they are DEAD wrong hello can anyone besides me see that our young children are taking their lives by those things .if you are not educated about stupid 4wheelers then dont get on them....they are a deadly game is the way i see them..i give up noone is going to listen and keep their kids off those dangerous things.i wish they would makeyou get a license to drive them the same as you do any vehicle.we would not let a 12,13,14,15yr.old have their license then why is any other vehicle different...concerned,parent

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Pike Co. on May 27, 2008 at 04:52 AM
My thoughs and prayers go out to these family at their great loss. This is very sad but people think... if it was someone you knewwould you want people to trash the parents? They are hurting enough and probley blaming theirself they don't need your input on the blame cause Im sure some of the familys read the comments. So just leave prayers to the family's! One without sin shall cast the first stone! Besides you don't know what your children do behind your back!

Posted by: terri Location: east ky on May 27, 2008 at 04:40 AM
These continued deaths on ATV's are the failure of parents and law enforcement officials, why are the laws NOT enforced????

Posted by: four wheeler Location: pike on May 27, 2008 at 03:34 AM
my prayers go to the familys thats lost love ones on atvs but you cant blame the fourwheeler cause they dont kill if you ride a bicycle fast enuff or crazy youll get killed or hurt bad but i think they need to stiffin the laws on whos old enuff you cant put kids on these things cause they see no danger i used to be a kid myself thats how i no

Posted by: Michele Location: Pikeville on May 26, 2008 at 08:50 PM
What are we going to do about ATV's.. they are not safe. They have claimed the lives of so many young people.

Posted by: Former Police officer Location: Kentucky on May 26, 2008 at 06:28 PM
Where was the thin yellow line? If police enforced the law our children would not be dying. There was a time off road motor cycles were the problem but the violators were arrested or given a citation. Now the police just wave at them. If they even notice them at all. Its called APATHY.

Posted by: Kevin on May 26, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Same story every weekend. No helmets, riding in restricted areas, parents (what parents)???

Posted by: Joseph Location: KY on May 26, 2008 at 06:05 PM
I just can't believe the stupidity of some parents who allow their children to ride these things. Oh, it will never happen to me...yeah right. Get with the program parents and keep your kids off these things. So what if your kid hates you for a bit. At least you'll have them around for the years to come.

Posted by: Samantha Location: Virgie on May 26, 2008 at 05:53 PM
This is a really sad thing to hear....The teen girl that got killed was like another sister to me...I lived beside of Sarah for almost 5 years....I am just so crushed to hear something like this a happening to her....I will keep the family in my prays...and Sarah will be sadly missed.
