The Pike County UNITE Coalition made two announcements on Thursday.

The first involved a 25-thousand dollar check and the second is a new woman's jail program.

Officials say the women's jail program will give hope to women in our region struggling with substance abuse.

These women are out of jail and trying to start a new life without drugs.

Officials say women need somewhere to turn when they're in that position.

“There are displaced with their children and they don't have no where to go. They've sought safe housing or someone won't rent to them due to their background,” Amber Campbell said.

Thanks to a 25-thousand dollar check from the Kentucky Bar Foundation,. Pike County UNITE Coalition Coordinator Amber Campbell says there is new hope for those women, “We envision the women's jail pilot program to be able to serve 40 women that are currently incarcerated in the Pike County Detention Center with substance abuse training.”

Campbell says the program will teach women how to adjust to life after jail and how to reconnect with their families and kids at the Carl D. Perkins facility in Johnson County.

UNITE Coalition Officials say the program has many advantages and one of the biggest is that it's close to home.

The county coalitions new recovery co-chair and the mother of three says she got clean in a rehab facility in Santee, South Carolina.

She has been clean for 3 years now, her mission is to make sure her daughters know the dangers of drugs.

Pike County's UNITE Coalition Coordinator Amber Campbell says people like Dotson, who wants to get clean, now has more options

If this program is run efficiently, it is probably money well spent. Drug addicts are people too. They are our sons and daughters, and we want them back. Jail is NOT the answer. Is is to be used as a last and final resort. Let's stay committed to help get these folks' life back, and as important, we must educate these young folks as to the real dangers of these drugs. How about some REAL commercials as to the dangers of this poison? Show real life scenarios of what the drugs do to the person AND his/her family? I used to feel hostility towards drug abusers, until someone I love fell into this cesspool...now, I'm not so self-righteous. We've GOT to help these folks. It's just the RIGHT THING TO DO.

LIFE IS HARD FOR EVERYONE IN THIS AREA. SO WHY ARE PEOPLE GETTING SO MUCH HELP IF THEY TAKE DRUG, MOST ARE BACK ON THEM IN A FEW MONTHS WHETHER THEY TELL THE TRUTH OR NOT. VERY FEW WILL CONTINUE TO HELP THEMSELVES. THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT ARE WORKING AND STILL CAN'T MAKE IT BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY. THEY HAVE A PROBLEM PAYING BILLS BECAUSE THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING IS GOING UP EXCEPT THEIR PAYCHECK. DO YOU SEE THEM GETTING CHECKS TO HELP PAY THEIR BILLS. YOU HAVE PEOPLE OUT THERE WITHOUT INSURANCE GOING IN THE HOSPITAL, LIVING WITH A SPOUSE ON SOCIAL SECURITY, AND THE HOSPITAL TAKING MOST OF THAT TO PAY THE BILL, BECAUSE THEIR NOT CONSIDERED DISABLED, BUT CAN'T WORK, NO HELP.....THEY DRAW TOO MUCH MONEY FOR TWO PEOPLE. WHERE IS THE JUSTICE OR ANY HELP FOR THEM...
