Two Eastern Kentucky car dealerships are closed tonight, leaving dozens of people out of work. Johnny Watkins says gas prices and the economy played a role in the closing of his two London dealerships.

Chances are, you've probably seen one of their famous commercials on WYMT. Not now. Johnny Watkins told his approximately 50 employees this week the dealership is closed.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to them and their families. Just hope they can get back on their feet soon," said Randy Smith, Director of the London-Laurel County Chamber of Commerce.

What happened? Well it's still unclear exactly, but Watkins says off-camera that gas prices and the economy definitely made things difficult on the business.

"Deeply saddened. He's worked very hard to get where he's at today. He did a lot of things the right way. Just very unfortunate what has happened," Smith said.

A few employees are still wrapping up some final work, but we're told operations have stopped at Watkins Chrysler dealership in South London and will soon stop at the GMC dealer in North London.

"He and his business will be obviously missed in our community. We're still hoping that something can be rectified and we can see him back in business," Smith said.

And Smith says the London-Laurel County economy is still fairly strong and he's hoping that will help the area weather the economic storm.

We tried to reach officials with Chrysler and GM for comment on the dealerships closing, but we've not heard back.

If gas prices is the perceived major problem with our economy, then you should be lobbying for off shore drilling in this country. It would take a few years but we would eventually be independent of the Arab Countries. Now tell me, which political party (or at least their major supporters) is against being independent of the foreigners? Hint: Bill Clinton voted against drilling in our country in 1995. We wouldn't be in this mess today if he would have some vision and foresight instead of focusing on his sexual needs. He also had the opportunity to wipe out Bin Laden and vetoed that too! WAKE UP!!!

You people are PATHETIC!!!!!!! Where do you get off thinking the Government ought to be taking care of you? Take care of yourself and quiting sitting around on your ssorry a@@es complaining. The government will NEVER be able to control the price of gas. It is traded around the world on the open market and goes to the highest bidder. Jesus with attitudes like yours no wonder most everyone in this country thinks we are toothless, barefoot and married to our cousin!

I feel bad for all those suffering right now. However, remember this in Nov. Everyone who voted for Bush twice!!, remember what we've got for it. While our $$$ is building Iraq, our bridges are falling, our factories closing. Polls say Ky. is in solid McCain territory. Well, remember McCain said "I don't know that much about economics". His wife just charged $750,000 on 2 American Express cards, and pays that off??!! Their kid charged $50,000 on one and pays that off??!! You think they even know how much gas costs?? Wake up people.

If we had a REAL Federal Government these job robbing gas prices would have been stopped a long time ago. I wish all the employees the best.

This is a shame. We have been customers of Johnny Watkins for 10 years, and have experienced outstanding customer service at their Pontiac dealership. They are definitely the last of a dying breed.

this is getting very scary, most of us have mortgages, vehicle payments, etc. what are we going to do when the same comes to our door steps? Is the government going to help or just sit back and watch, is the government even ours anymore or does the Saudis control them too...next is the United States of Arabia
