The Fourth of July is one of the deadliest times on Kentucky's roads. Kentucky State Police officers are already out in full force watching for speeders and people driving under the influence.

With more cars on the roads, Kentucky State Police are urging people to be extra careful.

"Just be very observant of other cars. Be what they call a defensive driver. Watch out for what other people are doing, you know also, watch your speed and make sure you're not a contributing factor to it," said Terry Brewer with the Kentucky State Police.

"Think about things before you do them. Drive the speed limit. Don't drink and drive. Make sure it's a happy holiday for everybody," said Barry Blair with the Kentucky State Police.

State police say the Fourth of July weekend is rivaling New Year's Eve to be the deadliest time on the road all year. Something many drivers says they're keeping in mind while traveling this weekend.

"It's always a concern, especially when you're on a bike an you're going to be in heavy traffic on a major holiday like that," said Greg Rubel.

Police say the number one factor in fatal accidents on the holiday is drinking and driving.

"A lot of people that go to these things you know, drink and drive and get impaired, so they're not able to drive well," Brewer said.

"And then on the way home, they are past the point of thinking. It's really going to be them that gets hurt," Blair said.

That's why they say they'll have several DUI checkpoints throughout Eastern Kentucky all weekend.

The holiday traveling period doesn't officially end until Monday night at midnight.

I don't think they're out stopping people for the heck of it the_man. If people go through a road block and they're not doing nothing illegal, then they have nothing to worry about. People don't have the right to break the law, so I don't see how anyone's rights are being "trampled". Sounds like you are awful worried about something, so maybe you need a change in your life style. Maybe not drink and drive, or back off a few pills our joints.
