The soaring gas and rising food prices aren't about to stop people from celebrating their independence.

The holiday weekend is just beginning, but it is already packed at Jenny Wiley State Park. Park officials weren't sure what to expect with the high gas prices and sluggish economy, but now they say this could turn into one of their best weekends ever.

The Haskins' from Ohio have a family reunion at Jenny Wiley State Park every July 4th. This year they started early and are staying longer.

"Made a long week out of it. Took vacation, bring the kids down to camp for the week," said Kathy Haskins.

Despite the long drive, they didn't let the high gas prices and increasing costs break their July 4th tradition.

"It's a little cheaper camping than staying in a hotel, but we're enjoying it," Haskins said.

And they aren't alone. All the campgrounds, cottages, and boat docks are booked all weekend at Jenny Wiley State Park.

"It's great for business. People are going to enjoy their Fourth of July," said Assistant Park Manager Ty Lindon.

This is the usual peak time for the park, but managers didn't know if it would be this year.

"The gas prices are a concern," Lindon said.

They were for John Caines, but he still made his annual holiday trip here from West Virginia and didn't let the gas prices bother him.

"You know it does, but you still got to get out and enjoy yourself," he said.

Park managers are glad he and the rest of the crowd are doing just that.

"One of our busiest weekends. Very exciting for the park staff. It looks like it is going to be a good, successful weekend," Lindon said.

There are events at the park all weekend for the "Great American Birthday Party Celebration," and other events at other parks across the Commonwealth.

A lot of people are enjoying this vacation since they probably won't be able to afford the gas to go on the next one.
