A chain of department stores that started right here in the mountains is closing its doors and leaving hundreds without jobs.

Dawahare's announced Thursday that the company is closing its remaining 22 stores by the end of September because of money problems. Many people know Dawahare's as a staple of Eastern Kentucky's economy. The family owned business is more than a century old. Now, the Dawahare family says they're devastated it has to end this way.

Frank and Theresa Dawahare say the store has been a staple in their family's lives. They found out this Fourth of July that every Dawahare's store is closing after Frank Dawahare's brother Harding, the company president, made the official announcement.

"He came up on the porch and told me. I was just numb and then coming out here today is just very real," Theresa said.

"It's sad. It's your history that you grew up with," Frank said.

A history he says has been running through his mind all day.

"Just started thinking when I was 6 years old, I would go in the store and the manager at the time would ask me to count all the suits on the wall," Frank said.

Customers say the news came as a disappointment to them too.

"It's really sad. Like I said, they have the Kentucky stuff, so they're sort of a local and state thing. You know it's kind of sad," said Joetta Stiltner.

Owners say they'd filed for bankruptcy because business was slow and now they predict they'll run out of money by October. As of September 30th, 400 Dawahare's employees will be out of a job.

"I just feel so sorry for the people that have worked here for years and years," Theresa said.

"It's truly been one of the best jobs I could've found around here. I'd say probably the best," said Ben Myers, Dawahare's employee.

Owners say liquidation will begin July 12th.

Frank Dawahare says he hopes the family can come up with an idea for another store that will be as successful as the Dawahare's chain was for so many years.

This is very sad news for all of Kentucky! This family has always been proud to be Kentucky based for their stores and have had great clothes for as long as i can remember. The Hazard store was fortunate enough to have an employee celebrate working there for 50 years just last week. She, all the other employees and the family will be missed. I want to thank them for supplying so many with jobs and great clothing for 101 years!

I have worked for the Dawahare family for several years. I have become part of their family. They have been very good to me and the rest of my staff. We are all very sad to see the legacy of Dawahares die this way. I know first hand that sales have been down. You probably know, too. Look at the parking lots in all of the shooping centers. They used to be at least half full all of the time. Now they only have a few cars other than the employees who work in the shopping centers cars. I do want to thank all of the wonderful people I have had the opportunity to meet and learn to know over the years. Most of our customers were like family to us. We had become freinds with most of our customers as well. We will truly miss each and every one of you. For the comments about things being too high, you are probably talking about items such as lucky, Tommy, Ralph Lauren, etc. Yes, they do come with a price tag. They are ticketed by the vendor, so no matter where you buy them you will pay that.

I was sad to hear about the closing of Dawahares. However, I was not surprised with the rising cost of gas and groceries people do not have the extra money to spend on luxeries like designer handbags and clothes. I know myself the rising cost of living has curtailed my spending. If something is not done about the high cost of gasoline I am afraid we will see a full blown depression. Thanks Bush!! Looks like you will still be going strong considering the oil wells that you own!

I used to shop there several years ago before the employees started profiling people by the amount of money they thought their customers had. I got tired of that rather quickly so I started shopping elsewhere. Never-the-less I hate to lose a neighborhood business due to management's bad business decisions. I never could see how this little company could grow to over 30 stores. RIP Dawahares.

I live in a small town that doesn't have much to offer in the way of clothing stores, so it doesn't effect me independently, although my concerns are all the employees that are loosing their jobs. The family's that are loosing their income. It isn't always about the business. Everyone needs to consider the people who make that business open their doors everyday. Without the employees to work the business is obsolete. These family's have to keep on providing and surviving. What are they going to do? I just want to wish all of you well and May God Bless Each and Everyone of You. May you all find employment soon!! I am sorry for all of you!! The Lord will provide your needs, just ask him!!!! Good Luck!!

This is sad. My family members have been patrons of Dawahares for years. This is the only store in Pikeville to over name brand clothing--Tommy, Ralph Lauren, CK, Sak, Fossil, D&B etc. Guess we'll be making more trips to Lexington or Huntington to spend our money. Pikeville is a decent sized town that needs to look in to offering more places to shop (and dine)

THEY WERE JUST TOO HIGH ANYWAY AND PEOPLE CANT AFFORD THAT STUFF JUST TO MAKE YOU LOOK BIG.

This is very sad, as we watch everything we took for granted go down the drain because of some foreign power and our own unpreparedness. We will miss you Dawahares and Johnny Watkins...RIP.
