Frankfort, Ky. - Conservation officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources yesterday arrested 10 people, cited an additional person, seized more than 125 venomous snakes and other reptiles, and expect to issue more than 700 charges following a nearly two-year undercover investigation focusing on the illegal possession, importation and buying and selling of reptiles in Kentucky.

Forty-four conservation officers served arrest warrants in Bell, Harlan, Madison, Letcher and Boone counties. Officers also seized illegal western diamondback rattlesnakes, timber rattlesnakes, cottonmouth water moccasins, northern and southern copperheads, cobras, great basin rattlesnakes, a gaboon viper, a puff adder and an alligator.

Undercover officers purchased more than 200 illegal reptiles during the nearly two-year investigation code named "Twice Shy" that included Internet sales. Officers levied 416 charges, and expect to issue at least 300 more charges as the investigation continues.

"This was a well-conducted and well-documented investigation that has put those who would engage in the illegal selling and buying of any wildlife in Kentucky on notice that they are subject to arrest and prosecution, " said Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Director of Law Enforcement Colonel Bob Milligan. "It is disturbing to me that individuals would keep such dangerous wildlife in their homes and in neighborhoods where they put their families, visitors and neighbors as such high risk."

* Gregory James Coots, 36, of Middlesboro was arrested and faces more than 150 charges of illegally buying, selling and possessing wildlife. Officers seized 74 snakes from his Middlesboro home, among them, 42 copperheads, 11 timber rattlesnakes, three cottonmouth water moccasins, a western diamondback rattlesnake, two cobras and a puff adder.

* Zechariah Johnson, 21, of Evarts in Harlan County faces at least 24 counts of illegally buying, selling and possessing venomous snakes. His father, Ricky Johnson, 55, also of Evarts faces at least 59 charges.
Officers seized 24 timber rattlesnakes and copperheads from the residence.

* Verlin Ray Short, 36, of Mayking in Letcher County, was arrested
and faces at least 78 charges of illegally buying, selling and possessing
venomous snakes. Officers seized 34 venomous snakes, including a western diamondback rattlesnake, a great basin rattlesnake, timber rattlesnakes and northern and southern copperheads.

* Roger Leo Day, 33, of Harlan, was arrested and faces six charges of illegally buying, selling and possessing wildlife.

* Jerrod Allen, 21, of Berea, was arrested and faces at least nine
charges of illegally buying, selling and possessing wildlife.

* Brian Fryer, 30, of Berea, was arrested and faces at least 46
charges of illegally selling, buying and possessing wildlife. Officers
seized an illegal firearm as well.

* Michael Peterson, 39, of Florence, was arrested and faces at least 21 charges of illegally buying, selling and possessing wildlife. Officers seized an albino cobra, and the frozen remains of a gaboon viper and copperheads.

* John Rowland, 46, of Berea was arrested and faces two charges of illegally buying, selling and possessing wildlife. His son, Joel Rowland, 18, of Berea also was arrested and faces the same charges.

* William R. Howard, 56, of Harlan, was cited and faces three charges of illegally possessing wildlife and at least 35 charges of transporting wildlife without a permit.

Each charge of illegally buying, selling or possessing wildlife is a misdemeanor offense carrying a maximum penalty of one-year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.

i have been in holiness my entire life. I have seen ppl die from serpent bites. I have also seen God move on the ones who were serpent bit. The ones who are saying they believe it and they know its right. Are you taking them up? a Believer is a doer! most of you aint, I know a couple of you. So really, get off your seats and move out for the Lord. Cast the devil out of someone, Get on fire for God. Handling serpents is only 1 of 5 signs. how can you work the signs in HIS NAME when you dont even take his name on in baptism? Really, Lets get over this and pray and seek the Lord.

its so sad the peoples tax dollars go towards Finding people who follow the bible for what it means... instead of doing a two year investigation on other Problems, like Drugs and Theft... This is pitiful... I believe in Mark 16 and every word is true!

Maybe we should send our current president to one of these churches and see if this would inspire him to be truthful??????????

And a partridge in a pot tree! I always thought the definition of wildlife was: A hillbilly with no teeth high on oxycontin on a $8,000 dollar four wheeler trying to jump the red river gorge into a pile of rocks. So our tax dollars can pay the medicaid bill. Not to mention! more drugs for the pain, and paid for by medicaid. At least these snake jugglers are trying to make a little money. Why don't they go after the Pot Growers Association of Kentucky, or help stop all the four wheeler deaths occuring every day in Kentucky. Seems priorities are a little off course here.

Mark 16:17 and these signs shall follow them that BELIEVE; In my name they shall speak with new tongues; 16:18 They shall TAKE UP SERPENTS; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. We`ll I believe that it means what it says. If god wanted them to write it in a parable then you would find it in the back of your bible in the parables. But no it isn`t, also it says if any man shall take away or add unto Gods words them plagues in the bible will be added unto you. I don`t think its right for people comin on here talkin against churches. How else could people handle them? They would have to have god! You can`t talk just half of the bible in and not take the rest it don`t work that way.

i realize that if it's illegal, it's illegal, but this is the thing-there are 4 known drug dealers that live right above and below me. the sheriff knows this, UNITE knows this, because they've been turned in. someone keeping snakes does not affect me. these druggies running around that could run over my child doped up, or kill someone over a pill does. bigger fish to fry here in letcher county that someone buying or selling or keeping a snake. GET THE DRUGS OUTTA HERE, AND WORRY ABOUT THE SNAKES LATER!

Hey I thought that in the Constitution it stated that everyone had a right to worship God. Why is holiness considered brain washing. I myself am holiness and I speak for the members that go to our church, we do not bother anyone or say anything about other denominations. Therefore, I wish that people would just love one another and quit putting people down for the things they believe in... If you don't understand, it is best to be quite and not say anything. Ricky Johnson is a preacher man and a very good one at that.. Be careful what you say about a true man of God.... He made a mistake, but I'm sure he is not the first one and will not be the last.. I'm sure glad that PEOPLE will not be my judge..

I just as soon have a snake living with me as a dog as 99 percent of ky people do at least they dont carry fleas and ticks and shed all that hair yak.they were made to hunt and be watch dogs.thats why they shed hair in the summer and grow it in the winter.not to sleep with and eat from the dinner plates.if they knew how it looked they would be ashamed.I dont want nothing to do with either one they can have their snakes and dogs.

I think that the law enforcement and other officials should spend their time busting drug dealers and bootleggers, something that is a real threat to people and not harass people because of their beliefs.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Harlan ky on Jul 12, 2008 at 10:34 AM
No, I do not believe in buying or selling serpents, and I agree this will bring a reproach.., but I do feel that while our officials are doing such busts as these what's going on inside other homes.. ? How many children that morning where lying in their beds screaming , begging for help from an abusive parent..? How many drug dealer sold that pill that kills our young people.. ? I am a believer all the way ,, it's fine if you dont believe ,, what if we believers started taking things from your homes that we didnt believe in?? What if we invaded your personal worship service and dogged it for the world to see.? All i know is that if you play with fire you'll get burnt.. These people won't get by doing this to God's people..."Vengeance is mine I will repay saith the Lord." Some of these men are innocent!!!

i dont know why everyone else had snakes but rick jhonson is a good man of GOD that belives in handleing snakes.i belive in it too.i thought we had a right to practice our own religion freely?the bible talks about snake handleing also.we dont force our belives on others.I never thought of having or handleing snakes as wrong,so i am kind of confused about it all but i have known Rick jhonson as a preacher most of my life,i dont belive he would intentionaly do something against the law...

The article did not say anything about selling them to churches. Sounds like a guilty conscience to me. Yes, it probably happens, but not in this article. Why do some people jump to conclusions is beyond me. Jealous maybe???

sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss don't they have bigger fish to catch?

In my opinion everyone has the right to choose their own method of worshiping in church, however I certainly don't believe in handleing snakes or any other kind of reptile. To me the sad thing is the danger to their children and grand children who will be very much in danger and braniwashed to believe that this is the right thing to do the prove that this is pleasing to God , and this is what is the word and this is what God wants them to do . Just terribly mis-interpreted.

What is the church world coming to??? Don't get me wrong I'm Holiness and I won't back down in what I believe in but this was taking things to far this does not look Good on us Holiness people.

What will become of the snakes will they be destroyed or eaten? But I guess if they are eaten they would be destroyed just makes sense. I hear that rattle snake is good to eat. But I'll just have to take someones word for it cause I don't want me no snake dead or alive.
