Good news for students hoping to go into social work as an eastern Kentucky college's social work major moves toward accreditation.
Union College says that after submitting a 500 page document outlining its plan for the new major that they have been approved for the required site visit and review by the Council on Social Work Education.
Officials say the program could achieve full accreditation by 2012. The social work major was added to Union's academic offerings in the fall of 2007.

As a future social worker, I would like to think that my last four years in school, my current internship placement, and future one year of graduate school will not be "useless." Not to mention my passion for helping those who cannot (for whatever reason) help themselves. Willard, I suppose you are blessed enough to never have had to utilize any sort of welfare program (which includes public schools, Medicare, Disability, social security, etc. in addition to Food Stamps, Medicaid, Unemployment, and other programs which people generally consider "welfare"). I suppose you'll also think social workers are useless if, God forbid, you ever enter a nursing home, hospital, jail, or prison, and you find yourself needing some sort of service, or feel that your rights are being violated. More than likely, there will be a social worker there fighting you. PS I wouldn't call removing a child from an abusive home, or finding addiction treatment for a meth addict "meddling." I call it saving a life.

If they are going to get the accreditation in 2012, why have students been taking classes since 07, looks like Union plans on keeping students in school for at least five years. Be careful students, Union has a history of swindling planned curriculums. Better look somewhere else to go to school or be your own advisor.
