Police continue to search for an armed robbery suspect who led them on a wild chase Thursday in Whitley County. Just knowing Charles "Bobby" Smith is on the loose is making many people uneasy.

Police continue to look for Charles "Bobby" Smith. Police say Smith robbed a woman in nearby Jellico Tennessee. When trying to serve a warrant on him Thursday, Smith ended up leading police on a high speed chase on Mud Creek Road in Whitley County.

"Saw the cops, looked like an SUV. It went by so fast I barely had time to look," said Charity Wynn, Mud Creek Road Resident.

Smith eventually abandoned a stolen Ford Explorer after police say he tried to run over the Jellico Police chief and rammed a cruiser. Police say Charles "Bobby" Smith actually approached some contractors Thursday evening drilling in the Gatliff area. Before the contractors knew who he was, police say Smith used one of their cell phones to make a couple of calls. Friday, police scaled down their all out search efforts. They're tracking down leads in hopes of finding him.

"The mountains are thick and it's gonna be hard to find him. He was smart enough to go to the mountains," said Mud Creek Road Resident John Leach.

It's all making those living along Mud Creek Road uneasy. John Leach says he's trying to protect his fiancee and grandmother.

"I couldn't sleep, slept from one to three then got up and kept a close eye on the house," Leach said.

"We did make sure all the doors were locked twice last night before we went to bed. It's scary," Wynn said.

Charity Wynn says she'll feel much better when Smith is caught.

"Ease our minds so we can sleep a little better at night," Wynn said.

But until then, residents are keeping a close eye out for Smith.

Police say Charles "Bobby" Smith also has a barbwire tattoo on one of his arms and he may have cuts all over him from walking through the woods.
