It all went down just after nine Friday morning outside the Fisty Post Office in Knott County. Police say Larry Fugate was in his car when his brother, Curtis Fugate, pulled the trigger and barricaded himself in his home. Now police want to know what went wrong.

Police say Larry Fugate was in his car when his brother shot him.

"I was in the office over here on a business call and my workers come in and said they heard a shot over here," said neighbor Kelly Smith.

Witnesses say Larry Fugate made his way inside the Fisty Post Office where a postal worker called 911.

"Larry was sitting up front, they had him bandaged up on the chest there, it looked like he was probably struck somewhere in the chest there," Smith said.

After the shooting, police say Curtis barricaded himself in his home, a camper parked on his brother's lawn. Police surrounded the property, and blocked off local roads. Curtis Fugate surrendered after an hour of negotiations with police.

"He was inside his residence, spoke with us, didn't want to come out at first, but then he eventually came out and surrendered to us without incident," said Ira Napier with the Kentucky State Police.

Neighbors say the brothers, both Army veterans, kept to themselves and say they don't know what could have lead to the shooting.

"I just know of them. I'm neighbors of them and I'd see them every day, but never thought nothing like this would have happened between them, you know," Smith said.

Police are still trying to find a motive.

Larry Fugate is in fair condition tonight.

Curtis is in the Kentucky River Regional Jail charged with first degree assault.
