Police say a man in Van Lear barricaded himself in his home with guns after threatening to hurt his family. The standoff ended with no shots fired and no one hurt, after officers got the man on the phone and convinced him to surrender. Neighbors say it was a scary afternoon.

People who live in the Powell Addition neighborhood in Van Lear say this is normally a peaceful area, but Friday morning, police took over after they say a man threatened to open fire. Sheriff's deputies say the man and his wife were arguing when the man got a handgun.

"I guess words led to threatened actions," said Lt. Tom Wyatt with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department.

Officers say the woman called 911 saying her husband was going to kill her. When deputies got there, they say he made more threats.

"Really concerned at that point. We were worried," said neighbor Kevin Holbrook.

"It could erupt into a volatile situation and any situation with a subject who is in a home with a firearm, it could have been a dangerous situation really quickly," Wyatt said.

Officers shut down Highway 1107 to keep everyone away.

Deputies say the wife and children got out safely. Investigators say they talked to the man on the phone for several hours before he surrendered.

"Anytime we can handle a situation and no one gets hurt, then it's a good day," Wyatt said.

"It's a prayer answered," Holbrook said.

Neighbors say they don't know what could have caused the incident.

"The family is great friends of ours, grew up in this neighborhood with me. They're really fine people," Holbrook said.

Now police are trying to find out what went wrong.

Police have not released the family's name. They don't know yet if any drugs or alcohol played a role in this, but they do plan to get the man some help.

No word if any charges will be filed.

This incident was blown completely out of proportion by the media and the authorities. The situation was not as bad as it appeared to be by the media. People that know the family know that all the man needs/needed is some help. Apparently he is getting help and the family is trying to work things out. If only the media would just drop this issue, the family can go forward.

Holy Schnikees! What ever happened to a little Marital argument? Now you feel like you have to draw your gat and put a cap in your domestic partners @#$%. Why can't you just sulk and withhold conjugal relations from one another like the rest of the married world? She uses the last square of Charmin Ultra in the bathroom and you come running in, guns ablaze, like Dirty Harry in the Diner hold-up. Somebody take the bullets out of Barneys gun already, before someone takes his eggo waffle and he goes all Lethal Weapon again.

Its a funny thing to me that the sheriffs office came in for a photo opportunity and to give the appearance that they took care of the incident...when in fact the State Police had to step in and take control of the situation and bring it to a peaceful ending. But the media with the help of the sheriffs dept gave the appearance that the sheriffs dept handled the situation. Evidently the sheriffs dept placed more importance on calling the media to the scene to get publicity before they called for the State Police to step in and take care of the problem.

No charges filed ??? I guess the man is one of the politically correct people in this county that Bill Witten protects. If it was anyone else, I'm sure they would have any number of charges against them and they would be in jail. Bill Witten is a corrupt sheriff that enforces two laws for two different types of people. State law for the common folk and Bill's law for all his buddies and people that vote for him. If you don't believe there is two laws, just ask his son why it took federal law enforcement to finally bust him.
