Police say a man in Van Lear barricaded himself in his home with guns after threatening to hurt his family. The standoff ended with no shots fired and no one hurt, after officers got the man on the phone and convinced him to surrender. Neighbors say it was a scary afternoon.
People who live in the Powell Addition neighborhood in Van Lear say this is normally a peaceful area, but Friday morning, police took over after they say a man threatened to open fire. Sheriff's deputies say the man and his wife were arguing when the man got a handgun.
"I guess words led to threatened actions," said Lt. Tom Wyatt with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department.
Officers say the woman called 911 saying her husband was going to kill her. When deputies got there, they say he made more threats.
"Really concerned at that point. We were worried," said neighbor Kevin Holbrook.
"It could erupt into a volatile situation and any situation with a subject who is in a home with a firearm, it could have been a dangerous situation really quickly," Wyatt said.
Officers shut down Highway 1107 to keep everyone away.
Deputies say the wife and children got out safely. Investigators say they talked to the man on the phone for several hours before he surrendered.
"Anytime we can handle a situation and no one gets hurt, then it's a good day," Wyatt said.
"It's a prayer answered," Holbrook said.
Neighbors say they don't know what could have caused the incident.
"The family is great friends of ours, grew up in this neighborhood with me. They're really fine people," Holbrook said.
Now police are trying to find out what went wrong.
Police have not released the family's name. They don't know yet if any drugs or alcohol played a role in this, but they do plan to get the man some help.
No word if any charges will be filed.
