A mother talked publicly for the first time since she was charged with the murder of her son Friday.

Mary Gibbs is accused of killing her son after putting a morphine patch on her son's back, but in an interview Friday night, Gibbs says she would never do anything to harm her son.

Mary Gibbs of Evarts is behind bars charged with the murder of her son who died back in February. She says she's innocent.

46-year-old Mary Gibbs says she couldn't believe it when police accused her of killing her son.

“I was in shock. Numb. I couldn't believe it, it was like a nightmare. Not real,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs' son, 24-year-old Steve Senters, III, died February 25th of this year.

Her indictment states that Gibbs placed a morphine patch on her son's back, causing his death. It goes on to charge Gibb's with tampering with physical evidence for later flushing the morphine patch down the toilet. She says that's not true.

“I hope that justice is served. I didn't intentionally hurt him,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs says her son had a drug problem.

“He just had a drug problem and he tried to get help and couldn't get help nowhere,” Gibbs said.

She says she and her son, Steve, had a great relationship.

“Anybody that knows me knows that I would never intentionally, bodily hurt my son. I would've gave my life to him at any given time,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs says now that her son is gone; she has nothing left to live for.

Mary Gibbs' bond is set at $500,000. She's due in Harlan Circuit Court on the 21st. In the meantime, she says she needs to get an attorney.

with a mother like that, who needs a "drug dealer". He has a good family. I knew them and I will be praying for them.

There's a similar case in Virginia: http://www.dailyprogress.com If the patch was not prescribed to him and she applied it for purposes of getting "high", she should be charged. I'm glad to see them cracking down on the dealers. Big and small. What kind of a mother could do that? I know he struggled with a drug problem but how could he stop if his Mother is supplying it? She should rot in prison. He had a good father and he tried everything to get him away from drugs but he wouldn't leave his Mother. I know her, believe me she deserves it.

First off was he prescribed the patch? Secondly if he didn't have a prescription for the patches why in the world would anyone put one of those deadly things on them? I have had them prescribed before and couldn't use them. They made me so sick I thought I would die.If she was trying to help her son.....drugs was not the answer. If I was around a drug addict I sure wouldn't help their addiction along. I would be trying to get them admitted somewhere for professional help.Guess this was a lesson in life she will never be able to take over.
