PRESTONSBURG – A months-long undercover investigation into drug trafficking in the Wheelwright community of Floyd County has led to the arrest of five individuals.

The investigation, a combined effort by Operation UNITE and the Kentucky Attorney General’s Department of Criminal Investigation, centered around illegal trafficking in a variety of prescription narcotics.

On Wednesday afternoon, August 6, law enforcement officers from four departments went to the residence of 57-year-old Russell Johnson on Route 306 in Wheelwright to serve a seven-count arrest warrant. Officers located Johnson across the street at Russell’s Game Room, a small store and amusement center that he operates.

After Johnson’s arrest a search was conducted at both his home and store. More than 300 prescription pills – a variety of controlled substances including Oxycodone, Methadone, Hydrocodone, Alprazlam and Diazepam – and approximately $1,900 in cash was discovered in the store.

While in the area, police set up a traffic checkpoint along Route 306. As a result, two individuals also wanted in conjunction with the investigation were located and arrested.

Two other suspects from the investigation were spotted at a nearby residence and were also arrested.

Participating in Wednesday’s operation were officers from UNITE, Department of Criminal Investigation, Wheelwright Police Department, and Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.

Those arrested and lodged in the Floyd County Detention Center were:

• Russell Johnson, age 57, of Highway 306, Wheelwright, four counts first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, two counts second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, and one count third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

• Tammy Johnson, age 30, of Highway 306, Wheelwright, two counts first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

• Arlie Miller Jr., age 57, of Highway 306, Wheelwright, two counts second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

• Mark Randall Smith, age 40, of Highway 306, Wheelwright, three counts first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, one count second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

• A.W. Stanley Jr., age 38, of Branham Heights, Wheelwright, one count second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

In 2003, Fifth District Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers (R-Somerset) worked to create Operation UNITE, a regional anti-drug initiative empowering citizens groups and community leaders in 29 southern and eastern Kentucky counties. UNITE, which stands for Unlawful Narcotics Investigations, Treatment & Education, seeks to fight the drug epidemic by expanding drug awareness and education programs to keep people from using drugs; coordinating drug treatment and outreach programs for those who are already addicted; and operating regional undercover law enforcement task forces for interdiction and prosecution of those dealing drugs. Rogers has directed $36.6 million in federal funds to the counter-drug initiative over the past five years. For more information contact Karen Engle toll-free at 1-866-678-6483.

I am 38 years old I have never sold a pill or took a pill. Their is no reason for anyone to sell pills to feed their families I have raised my child by myself and I have worked every day. I never graduated from college and I have a good job it took me 8 yrs to get here but I did it by working hard. To me people who sell are lazy looking for the easy way out. I have had family members who got caught selling and I had no pitty on them I hope all the drug dealers get caught, and if I ever find out one sells to mine they better hope the law gets them before me!!!!!!! I not ashamed to tell who I am I'm protecting my family.

GO UNITE!!! Please come back and visit again real soon. Also visit the Weeksbury community as I hear the business is blooming -(marijuana). Five down, one thousand to go.

Everyone that sells drugs knows that there is a chance to get caught. So if you play you must pay. Everyone writes on here about how they are supporting their families, okay whose supporting the families of the ones that have overdosed and died. Are the drug dealers sending money to the ones that died because of the drugs that they sold to them and killed them. There is a lot of people everywhere that has a drug problem and I think they should get help. This is where the court system needs to step up and make it a requirement and part of their sentencing. There are a lot more drug dealers out there that has not been caught yet but they will get caught in due time. We as a community needs to step up a protect our community, the law enforcement officers can only do so much. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE A YOU BETTER WATCH YOU MIGHT BE NEXT ONE THEY ARREST.

Check the arrest record on them, most of them have been down this road before, with only a slap on the wrist, bet it is the same again//

I know the people that got caught in wheelwight.. To Russell he was a very kind harded person.. He would never let anyone go hungury.. I respect Russell and I will keep praying for him an his family..

Nunya, I'm sorry that their families are reading this, but they need to know that their family members are trash and that the majority of the community view them that way. And to the son of whoever, the reason we stay anonymous when we post is we know what criminal scum are capable of. We'd rather keep our houses and posessions. And to RUSSEL and JOHNSON, you are so sad. There are millions of people who do honest, hard work and don't take the cowards way out that the five above do. You get no pity from the good people.

Jeff, did you ever try to stop a 4 wheeler, most of them run, even if it is a teenager just out riding around. And it is so easy to wreck one, it is not worth trying to stop them, would you want the death of a person on your hands, if they were just trying to get out of a ticket.

thry would catch more if they checked out the illegal aliens in pburg

I hope all who sells Drugs etc. will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I in no way condone this type of activity. You poison the future for you own gain. I guess in some way this makes them feel good for their own life failure. If someone made a good life throug hard work and dedication they wouldnt have to sell pills to get money. These type people are failures. Just look at yourselves in the mirror, you are not well groomed, you are unhealthy, you take no pride in yourselves. You might as well just live the sorry life you have created for yourselves and leave the good people alone. I hope the law removes all you drug dealers from our streets. Hmm, just passing by the dealers is like looking at a sewer pit. I bet your parents are proud. A drug dealer carries all the money they have usually in their pockets making it look like their loaded. Well, guess what, Now who's laughing you bums. Haaaa, haaaa. haaaaa

Hey, Howard, what makes you so high and mighty.... there are A LOT of my friends and I that work everyday and I know even more hard working people in this area, so lay the hell off us... and yes, I know Johnson very well an I have never done drugs... this doenst make him a bad person, just a person with bad judgement... we all make mistakes and a lot of times are aware we are making it as we do it.... I agree with letting the punishment fit the crime and am in no way upholding these people, but all these negative comments you guys are putting on here are not gonna make any difference in how they are punished, but sit back and think about who's gonna read them, not Russell, Tammy, Arlie, A.W., or Randy, but their families... and no matter how wrong their actions were, their families still love them... so get a life and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!! I'll pray for you all in advance so when Russell's family reads your comments, lightning may not strike you...

Thats a great solution to the drug problem....blame the government. Blame anyone and everyone but don't put the responsibility on the individuals that abuse the drugs.

well ill tell you first hand in my situation i dont care who you are you will do what you have to to feed you kids (me personally) they took my dad for trying to support his house and what dont sell drugs takes them in wheelwright about 75% and all of wheelwright knows it so if you think its funny just keep laughtfing what comes around goes around and youll get whats comming to you if i wanted to give wymt a interview it wouldent be good for them there are kid every day that die in a childrens hospital thats a bigger story but no they want to ruin everybody elses life so shove it i dont like yall anyways i hope your happy because you have ruined my life and last but not least the annomis people in wheelwright comminting why you hiding your faces you scared shut your mouth and thing wont be the way they are

Posted by: anonymous on Aug 8, 2008 at 09:02 PM
OK, I used to reside in wheelwright I guess for a year or so, BIG MISTAKE, this is not a place to raise children unless you want them to turn out like rednecks and ride four wheelers all up and down the road and sell drugs. Second, and i am being completely honest, they really need to look into the fact that certain people have certain connections with those who are supposed to protect and serve in the wheelwright community, that is why this problem has not come out until now. It was so OBVIOUS what was going on, it was like right in front of your face, especially on friday and saturday nights and a blind eye was turned all the time. What I see coming from this situation is that someone will have enough pull, to make a deal, so that these people will not receive much, if any jail time, and they will continue to do the same thing that they always do, except this time they will be more secretive about it.

Posted by: Johnson Location: Wheelwright on Aug 8, 2008 at 08:51 PM
OK SO WHAT THEY GOT CAUGHT AND THE REST OF THEM HAVENT! AND MOST OF YOU ALL THAT ARE PUTTING THESE LITTLE COMMENTS DO IT YOURSELF.THEY WAY I SEE IT IS YOU EITHER SELL,BUY OR TAKE. YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR FAMILY. I RESPECT ALL FIVE OF THEM FOR STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE OF TAKIN CARE OF THERE FAMILYS NO MATTER WHAT. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NOT PAYING TAXES BECAUSE I HAVE WORKED IT IS STILL HARD TO MAKE IT. NO ONE HAS ANY RIGHT TO THROW OFF ON ANY OF THEM BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE TO PAY THEIR BILLS.SO LOOK IN THE MIRROR BEFORE YOU JUDGE.AND THE WAY I SEE IT IS ALOT OF YOU ARE THROWING ROCKS AT GLASS HOUSE.

THESE PEOPLE THAT MAKES THESE COMENTS ARE PROBALY THE PEOPLE THAT OWES HIM.HE HAS BEEN FAIR WITH EVERY ONE & TRIES TO HELP EVERYBODY....

Five down and at least five Hundred to go.

Posted by: k Location: lewisl co on Aug 8, 2008 at 06:50 PM
Hay jeff, did you ever try to stop a person on a 4 wheeler? Some of them will stop, then a lot of them will run. So should they be chased. Did you ever see the brains splattered all over the road because of someone wrecking on a 4 wheeler. Some of them are just riding to have a good time, some might have drugs, but when it just a teenager who does not want to get a ticket, it isnt worth seeing them get killed over a ticket.

Posted by: bil Location: floyd on Aug 8, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Bushs fault for destroying the economy???? No one made them sell drugs..They sell drugs because they are lazy and wont work for an honest dollar. Drug dealers ahve been around thru more than one president..The economy, yea..Ok..laziness is what it is..They could go to work if they wanted..

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Floyd County on Aug 8, 2008 at 04:42 PM
The sad part is these people are looked up to. They play the role of hero to many of the teens in Floyd County because of the money they make. Parents need to understand that when your kids see that you are too scared to alert the authorities about trash like the five mentioned in the story, that you are just showing your kids that they are more powerful than the law. Then IF someone, like UNITE and the Wheelwright PD, is brave enough to do something about the drug dealing scum, they are "slapped on the wrist" by corrupt politicians in Prestonsburg and Frankfort. This teaches the kids that low-life drug dealing scum, like the people in the story, are above justice. I wonder how many of them are already out on the streets. The only positive side is trash like them probably will tell on their other friends and those people will go to jail for a little while. How long before Mr. Johnson will have his "pharmacy" operating again?

Posted by: john on Aug 8, 2008 at 02:34 PM
Brad, I do agree with you Bush and the republicans are a lot to blame and lets all remember that come November.

Posted by: Brad Location: Bypro on Aug 8, 2008 at 12:16 PM
this is all McCain and Bush's fault with destroying the economy.

Posted by: point of view Location: ain't tellin' on Aug 8, 2008 at 12:07 PM
Hey people. It is so easy to blame someone else. People have to take responsibility for their actions. Up here, people have to pay to play. It is the people who turn their backs, and have the connections who get away with it. I don't know any of these people personally, but I would bet that they simply quit "paying their taxes" Everyone up here knows who the bad guy really is, and everyone knows he will never have to pay for all the illegal things he has allowed to continue, and he will never have to pay for all the money he has stuck in his own pocket. Now lets point fingers where they need to be pointed. And people are crying around about their kids. Well, raise them right and know where they are and what they are doing, and quit blaming your poor parenting on someone else. Yes, drugs are bad, but this whole county is just a joke. I know for sure that one of the people that is out making arrests, needs to be knocking on his own daddy's door. He knows who he is.

Posted by: jeff on Aug 8, 2008 at 11:33 AM
I would suggest UNITE stop these illegal 4 wheelers on public roads that are carrying tons of drugs totally unchecked, in fact the police just turn the other way as they go by with a cooler full. They could conficate this many drugs in one afternoon down on route 1278(watts).

THE SALLY POSTED IN WHEELWRIGHT COMMENT IS NOT THE SALLY IN BRAHMAN HOLLLOW

Posted by: sally Location: Floyd County on Aug 8, 2008 at 10:57 AM
I didn't mean that I thought Johnson should a off. I think Johnson needs to pay, and his daughter needs to encourage him to report the other drug dealers.

Posted by: Fred Location: Floyd County on Aug 8, 2008 at 10:47 AM
I hope that they get everyone of the drug dealers in Floyd County. I work everyday and I don't have as much as they have. If they had to work for their money they would starve. My mornings start @ 6;00a.m. and their days start around 1:00p.m. If they had enough evidence to arrest them, I think they should have to pick up garbage on the side of the road for at least 3 years and wear a sign stating they have been arrested for drugs to stay away form them.

Posted by: Neighbor Location: Floyd County on Aug 8, 2008 at 10:26 AM
I would like to comment on what Bill said. Drugs are real and affecting everyone's family. This is not about poor people. The rich is also affected. People need to open their eyes and realize what drugs is doing to our community. People steal off hardworking people to feed their habit. Also, children are not stolen by the state. If the parents can't stay off drugs and care for their children then they don't need them. At least someone is feeding them and keeping them clean. Everyone deserves a second chance but the chances have to run out somewhere.

Posted by: charles on Aug 8, 2008 at 10:19 AM
There are so many drugs left unchecked nobody really cares anymore about such small arrests and stories.

What about the docs prescribing all this junk?

Posted by: Someone Location: Somewhere on Aug 8, 2008 at 08:27 AM
Don't just give em a slap on the hand! Don't let them back out to get with the rest of their druggie friends and cohorts. If Johnson or any of them try to work a plea deal that your talking about Sally, usually they let them walk on a lesser charge. KEEP THEM LOCKED UP!

Posted by: Bill Location: Pikevile on Aug 8, 2008 at 07:41 AM
WOW what happend to being proven guilty??Where did most of this dope come from??You can bet it comes from Democrat social programs and provided to people on SSI and SS and sold to dope dealers in the parking lots of drug stores all over Ky.The feds supply it, and the state locks up every one they catch with it.Its called a set up.The war on drugs is nothing more then a industry on the backs of the poor.More jails, more social workers, more cops, more homes taken, more familys broken, and childern stole by the state.Millions spent with no good results.the boss hoggs love it.

People like this are what has made a what used to be a good place to live in. Now they have turned it into a city full of drugs! They are not only drug dealers but are people who are killing our young children off because they don't care who they sell to. The sad thing is that there are plenty more of them out there that need to be gotten! This is a prayer answerd by many I'm Sure. Christians keep praying thy will will be done as the Lord says! PRAISE GOD!!
