A man who ran for governor twice is spending his second night behind bars.

WYMT'S Michel Mason was the only television reporter to speak with Otis "Bullman" Hensley from jail Tuesday afternoon.

Otis Hensley says the words will never come out of his mouth again. Known to many as "Bullman", Hensley claims the controversy is over a phrase he's said to many people over the years.

"I said you wanna trade them girls to a good hog, and just turned around and walked off," said Hensley from the Harlan County Detention Center Tuesday.

He's speaking out to try and clear his name.

"It was just a joke. I've been doing it for years," added Hensley.

A man who ran two memorable campaigns for governor of Kentucky from atop a fiberglass bull, now finds himself somewhere he's never been.

"Everybody knows I've run for governor. I'm a very honorable man. I do not lie," claimed Hensley.

Hensley says he was shopping at Don's Super Saver Monday afternoon, when he admits to making the comment to a women with two young girls, ages 11 and 13.

"I've never seen the people before in my life. They was in Harlan County. I'm well known, I just assumed they knew who I was," said Hensley.

But in less than 60 seconds, Hensley says his life changed.

"I said ten words to the lady. Less than a minute."

Hensley claims he tried to apologize to the family at the store and again at the courthouse when the charge was filed against him.

"I can't believe that they done that and I can't believe I've been in jail for so long for something I did not do. I think the system needs to be changed," said Hensley.

He says it's a joke no one will ever hear him tell again.

The family who pressed charges against Hensley did not return our phone calls for comment Tuesday.

Hensley pleaded not guilty to attempted unlawful transaction with a minor.
He's being held on a $10,000 bond.

Hensley says he hopes to take a lie detector test soon and isn't ruling out another run for public office in the future.

It is getting sad that people can't even joke with another person without being jailed. Eastern Kentucky is a place where people will strike up a conversation with anyone they may meet during their day. The thought that someone would take a innocent joke and turn it into this mess is unthinkable. I'm a 20 year old girl, and if someone had made such a comment to me I would simply laugh it off. I would have laughed it off at the age of these young girls as well. I don't think the girls thought as much of it as the family has. I just think this family is a little desperate for money and a little attention. Karma is tough and I hope this nonsense comes back to bite this family in the end.

This is a new day for what is acceptable speech. These country "good ole boy" expressions are obviously being perceived as offensive to some. In other words, folks just can't take a joke these days.

I think this is crazy to have this man in jail. If the facts are true this is all that he said. I think someone higher up has something else against him. I have two kids and have had that ask to me. I have two kids and had the same said to me. No big deal. This world today everyone is looking for some easy money and attention. I THINK THE LADY NEEDS A LIFE!!!! Most people knows this is Hillbilly Talk. Must be another reason for this not sure what it is. I know people that has done worse and they are not in jail.

I grew up in a very rural part of KY and have never heard that saying. Again I stress that if you were to say it to someone you know it could be perceived as a joke but to say it to someone you pass on the street is stupid. I don't blame the mother of those children for pressing charges. Better safe than sorry! For those of you who think its a waste of time please think twice. What if a complete stranger said something similar to you? He didn't know the woman!!!! I wouldn't trust anyone coming up to me saying something about my children then walking off. I'd be frightened - we no longer live in the day where the bad guys are easily recognizeable. That mother did the right thing in calling the police, he could have easily been a pedophile and the comments on this page would be totally different. Again I stress - she didn't know him!!!! I don't know him and probably would have reacted the same way!!!

I cannot believe that I am seeing a story such as this on the news. What is happening? It seems that a person is going to have to watch each and every word they say to others. ANY thing out of the way or that is just a joke is considered a crime.

I have heard this before. I grew up hearing it. If this was all that was said, then it should have went in one ear and out the other. Maybe he caught someone on a bad day or something. Who knows.

I am sure if this all he said it was a joke. But surely this guy didn't run for the Governor of Kentucky.

This is ridiculous to even have the man in jail. It is a saying that I have heard so many times. It sounds to me like this woman is just trying to make a quick buck. As far as the grammar, I agree it is pretty bad. But thinkn about it, how many people do you hear around hear talk like that, a lot of them. People need to think before they open their mouths BUT with something so common as that it should not have been taken out of context. I hate that joke but I would never press charges against someone for saying, I would roll my eyes at them and go on with my own business.

I think this is terrible. The man was obviously just joking and I do not understand why he is in jail.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 20, 2008 at 08:53 AM
stupid, time consuming, not to mention a complete waste of tax payers money on a dumb case like this.

Posted by: Michael Location: Lex on Aug 20, 2008 at 08:36 AM
Not only was it a bad joke, but his grammar is deplorable. "They was in Harlan County?" I bet he doesn't even have a good hog to trade...LOL! What a jerk!

If that is all hensley said that woman needs to be brought up on charges.

I have heard my Uncle say a thousand times he was gonna trade his wife for a good billygoat! And this is a stupid story with attention getters behind the whole thing. Someone better read or come to understand (HILLBILLY SLANG). This is a crock of BULL!!!!

Something's fishy here. I believe someone has a political agenda to keep Otis from running for office in the future. I don't believe Otis is guilty.
