Imagine a wall of mist the size of a six story building. That's what you'll see at one big attraction in Whitley County.

Tourists from all over the country come to Whitley County to see what they call the Niagara of the south. The water falls 60 feet down and is 125 feet wide.

Heather Miller says she just can't stop snapping pictures.

"I think it's breath taking. I think it's just a reminder of how powerful nature can be. How powerful it is and how small we are when you look at something that big and that forceful," Miller said.

And folks say its beauty is something that's hard to describe.

The falls transform at night and there are certain times of the year when you can see the "Moonbow", a rainbow made by the moonlight refracting against the wall of mist. It's a phenomenon not found anywhere else in the western hemisphere.

"It happens only at Victoria Falls, which is South Africa, so just come to Cumberland Falls and you won't being running the risk of being eaten by a wild boar or anything," said Park Manager Lisa Davis.

For those who don't mind waiting up late, tourists gather around the falls on nights when it's possible to catch a glimpse of the moonbow, two nights before and two nights after a full moon.

"We saw the moonbow on Sunday, well early Monday morning and that was really pretty," said Caitlin McKelvey of Florida.

The observation decks are open until midnight except, of course, on nights where the moonbow is a possibility and then they're open later.

If you missed our live Mountain Life show from Whitley County, you can catch it when it re-airs Saturday, August 23rd at 7pm.
