An Eastern Kentucky inmate is in the hospital after police say he was nearly beaten to death in jail.

Ten inmates are accused of throwing the kicks and punches. It happened in the Floyd County Detention Center earlier this month. Thursday, the inmates were all charged with assault.

Police say 55 year old Terry Fisher is in very serious condition in Cabell-Huntington Hospital in West Virginia, but he's non-responsive and may not survive. Officers say he was in jail, accused of molesting a child, and investigators say that's no excuse for the attack.

Investigators believe ten inmates began hazing accused child molester, Terry Fisher, on his first day in jail. Three days later, police say it turned into major fighting.

"Some of the inmates went into a rage and Mr. Fisher was the target," said Det. Steve Little with the Prestonsburg Police Department.

He says the inmates beat Fisher almost to death, including stomping his head into the concrete floor.

"I am very upset that this happened," said Floyd County Jailer Roger Webb.

Jailer Webb says it happened in less than 30 minutes, during a shift change. He says officers did their midnight walk-through and Fisher was fine. At the 12:30 check, he was bloody and unconscious.

"You know, on occasions, tempers do flare, but this was beyond a flared temper," Webb said.

Webb says the cell is actually where he puts non-violent inmates. The ten accused are in jail on mostly theft or drug possession charges.

"Really, in this dorm, this should have never happened. Sometimes you can get one bad apple stirring up the dorm and cause a lot of serious problems," Webb said.

Police say one of the men involved is former social worker, Chris Newsome. He and six others, Ivan Gunnels, Matthew Ritchie, Stephen Jervis, Michael Rowland, Kevin Lee Woods and Larry Adkins are all accused of throwing the worst punches and are charged with first degree assault. David Johnson, Ronald Spurlock, and Keith Page are charged with fourth degree assault.
Police are still investigating how the hazing got out of hand.

"It is obvious to me, that Mr. Fisher was very scared to speak up about his safety," Det. Little said.

"Godspeed that he gets well," Webb said.

Police say the ten accused won't be getting out anytime soon.

Six of the inmates were arraigned Thursday afternoon. Keith Paige pleaded guilty. Chris Newsome, Matthew Ritchie, Stephen Jervis, Michael Rowland, and Kevin Lee Woods pleaded not guilty.

Jailers say three others were in the cell, but they did not participate in the alleged beating.

everyone needs to set back and think about this the men in the jail really doesn't know what each other is in there for .so who told them that terry was a child molester . everyone knows that he's not going to tell them.the way i look at this is that the the person who told the men what he was in for should have to anwser for this. they do as thier told so they stay on the officers go side. and not lose the few things they do get in that place. someone really needs to look in on alot of things that goes on in that jail. something eles that i really don't understand is why they let some of the men out if this went on before they got out .why not make them stay. they don't even know thier side of this they just have hear say . what if the men in there still are mad at some of the one that was let out....

Things like this happen when you have an incompetent jailer..jailers and Sheriffs shouldent be an elected position..My god they need actual exp for these positions..The floyd co jail has a long history of stupidity..Its known throughout the corrections system..

why haven't you reported anything about the "other" child molester in the cell that aided in the beating? he deserves the same punishment he doled out to mr. fisher. everyone in this area knows that keith paige will be sentenced in less than 2 weeks for 3rd degree rape of a minor.

i just won't to let u people know that the jailer can not be at the jail all the time. and yes he has workers there but when there is a shift change it's hard to watch everyone.william u call jailer roger webb boss-hog. i beleive you are thinking of someone else.why don't u ask the county judge why the jail is overloaded.that's why he has no place to put a man with a crime that he has.sorry but it's not the jailer's fault that this happened

If everyone reading this story would use their brains and think, how did the inmates find our the charges unless the workers told them. They were supposed to be locked up and could only find out if they were told by someone. I think that the jail should be investigated and why they didn't keep him in the drunk tank behind the desk where they could watch him.

Why don't the police ask the inmates how they found out what the charges were against the victim. Could it be that the guards told them? What is the Floyd County jail trying to keep quiet?

You know what I hate to say that I would ever want to see anyone beat to death but if anyone deserves to be beat it is someone that would do harm to a child! Maybe for each day that he hurts and feels like He** then may he think this is how he made that child feel when he molested the poor little one. I do not wish harm on anyone because I am trying to live my life right but so help me if i was on the jury for these inmates I don't know that I could find any of them guilty! The baby couldn't fight back against this man so they did it for him! He is probably lucky that they didn't take away his ability to molest another child by removing the offending parts!

What I do not understand is why the jail officals did not stop this when it was at the "hazing"? And when they did know this was going on why did they not move this child molester that no one is going to like to a jail cell by his self? I think much of the crime in this case belongs to the Law Enforcement that did a very poor job of protecting this criminal. It is after all the responsablity of those who have taken custody to make sure those in custody are treated fair and protected.

Well in case anyone has forgot America set up a justice system there was a time in the old west you just hang a man before sun went down where all carry guns and blood was on the streets well we kinda came a ways from that not to far but little way LET THE JUSTICE SYSTEM WORK The jailer became the Judge and the inmates became excursionist's The over thru American Justice system. did not give it time to work now it might work against them if this is the case then state cops should start killing people at road blocks set up portable lethal injection booths at check points make sense?

if you ask he got what he deserve for doing that child like that any man that do a child like that they need their private parts cut off so they wont be able to do it anymore to any other child or person

I think the whole jailhouse staff needs to be investigated. Theres a lot more crooked stuff goes on there than this! Someone needs to check out the living conditions and treatment of the inmates.

My prayers are with all involved. There are more children than one involved here. Some of the men involved in the beating also have children who have to be horrified at the crime of their father. What a sad lesson to teach children. I'm sure this has also added to the trauma already suffered by the molestation victim. Is the child going to think that because of telling, someone was killed? Will this keep other children from telling? It's easy to say "he got what he deserved". Forgiveness and mercy aren't always the easiest thing but, are God's way. My prayers are with all involved.

Are not some of you putting the horse before the cart? This man was (accused), not convicted yet! I am sure God didnt need the help of the other SINNERS to do his job! Why cant we let the LAW and the COURTS do their duty, thats what they get paid to do! Also I do agree that if this man molested a child, then he should die, but that decision wasnt for the other inmates to make! I believe the COURT SYSTEM OF FLOYD COUNTY KY would have taken care of the problem! Leaves A feller wondering at lots of goings on, here in this county! And why was Mr Fisher so scared for his safty, and why wasnt something done prior to this?

If no-one saw or heard any of this, how can charges be different for the ten inmates? Can the officers not hear the prisoners, dont the jail have cameras? And how did the Jailer decide who threw the WORST PUNCHES? Just think about this people, jails without supervision!

Fisher got off easy for what he done to that child.

Why is this a problem?? Frankly, I'm surprised that the men applying jailhouse justice didn't take a jury trial. NO jury in the WORLD would convict ANY person who is accused of ridding the world of a scumbag child molester! I'm sorry, but these men are heroes and should have their sentences reduced, not increased. Hopefully they will get a decent lawyer and rescind their pleas. Tammy Lee Gibson, the Baseball Bat angel who pummeled a sex offender 11 months after he was seen talking to her daughter, will be acquitted by the jury rendering a not guilty verdict in Washington.

Hey Mr. Investigators in my eyes ,it was every excuse for the beating. Those ten men, still didn't do as much damage to this Terry Fisher, as what he did to this child.[If guilty,he deserved every kick and hit that he got.]As for the enmates,I hope you get jurors that think as i do!

Now I want to Know when is the jailer and the employees going to be charged? This was All there fault no matter more so then the inmates...Boss Hog would be charged as well the people of Floyd county elected him to Protect prisoners in jail The jailer and jail employees all should be fired and charges pressed against them with the beaters In the case this mans dies they should be charged with at least manslaughter.

Mr. Fisher should have been put in an isolated cell. I'm not saying at all that the other inmates are responsible for the brutual attack. But this was something that should have been watched carefully because of Mr. Fisher's charges. I have known people have worked at the jail and know that the inmates are abused for no reason sometimes. The jail needs to make sure that things are more safe at all times. Mr. Fisher, regardless if guilty or not, should have never been put with other inmates in the first place. With God's will, I pray he will be fine & be able to become a better citizen. The beating should have never occured if things were done properly.

I have some questions, why was a child molester put in a cell with others, even though its for non-violent offenders? Everyone knows child molesters are hated even by the worst of criminals. The meanest person in the world can get angry over a child being mistreated.I wonder what he did to the child and did he think about hurting that child while doing it?I wonder if he thought about the child when he was getting beaten up?I don't believe in taking the law into your own hands,as these men did,but I sure don't believe in hurting a helpless child. I'm sure the parents of this child thinks he got what he deserved.I agree that this was beyond "flared tempers" it was revenge for an innocent child.I hope Fisher survives and can be tried for his crimes.I hope he will seek forgivness from God.
