LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A mayor in eastern Kentucky accused of federal vote-buying charges says he is "taken aback" by the indictment.

Pineville Mayor Bob Madon also told the Lexington Herald-Leader in a story published Thursday that he has no plans to resign. He said his attorney advised him not to comment on the charges against him.

Court documents say 73-year-old Madon and his 44-year-old son, Brent Madon, conspired to influence voters with cash and prescription drugs during the 2006 mayoral election. Madon won the election.

The newspaper said Brent Madon could not be reached for comment.

The indictment was unsealed in federal court in London on Wednesday. The sealed indictment was returned in July.

Both men face a maximum prison sentence of up to 30 years if convicted.

I wonder if it's possible to find out if the mayor and/or son had narcotic prescriptions filled and which doc wrote those. Probably protected by HIPPA. There is surely a story there.
