U.S. 23 in Pike County was the scene where two tractor trailers collided on Wednesday night.

The highway was shut down for several hours in Dorton while crews cleaned the scene.

Officials say a coal truck was in the turn lane when the other truck slammed into the back of it.
That driver was flown to Holston Valley Hospital in Tennessee.

Investigators think he had a medical condition and blacked before the accident.

“He wasn't from the area, and he didn't know the road. Possibly, he said, his blood pressure had been up all day, so maybe he did blackout. He doesn't remember,” Ralph Mullins, Shelby Creek Rescue Squad Chief, said.

The coal truck driver was not injured.

Oil and gas also spilled onto the road, but crews cleaned it up.

The Gilbert truck was on his way to get loaded and was empty at the time of the accident.
