Saturday Update: There is new evidence in the armed robbery of a Letcher County bank that may lead to an arrest in the case.

Officers with Jenkins Police tell us they are still searching for the suspect accused of robbing the Community Trust Bank Friday afternoon. Police have not said how much money was taken, but say they should know more in a couple days.

Police are not releasing the nature of the new evidence, but say they're confident the information will lead to an arrest.

Friday: Police say as of late Friday night, the alleged armed robber is still on the run. Witnesses say he went into Community Trust Bank in Jenkins, waiving a knife and demanding money. They say it happened so fast, but they were still able to give police a description of the suspect.

Customers at the Jenkins’ bank say they thought it was just a normal Friday. For Cheryl Belcher, she was just standing in line, waiting for her turn. “Then it came my turn and then next thing you know I’m standing there and the door opened and this guy come through there with a knife.”

James Stephens, with Jenkins’ Police Department, says “Today at approximately 3:55 a white male with a white ball cap, gray, un-tucked t-shirt, dark blue jeans entered the Community Trust Bank, demanded money from the bank staff, waiving a knife.”

Belcher says the blade looked about eight inches long. Belcher says, "So then he lunged towards the teller and told her he wanted the money again and she said no so. He was really nervous though, he was really nervous and like in a real big hurry and he just grabbed the money that I had laying there and took off with it.”

Police say the suspect took off on foot. Belcher says she watched the alleged robber take off out the back door and run down the road behind the bank. “You can’t believe its happening. It's like, I don't know. It scares you so bad you just can't believe it's going on.”

Belcher says it was an emotional experience for everyone involved, but says she's glad no one was hurt. “One lady was crying and the other kept holding her tears back. I just went outside and looked up and thanked God for watching over me this day.”
