Police in Harlan County are searching for a man they say stole a purebred dog from a woman's yard and tried to sell it. Now the owner and her best friend are reunited, but she's still feeling uneasy.

Shawna Browning's purebred Rottweiler, Jackson, is worth about $500, but to her he is priceless. She thought she'd lost him for good when a neighbor told her what she witnessed from her window across the street.

"He was tied up in our garage, and a boy came up into my yard and took him," Browning said.

The neighbor wrote down the license plate number of the car the young man allegedly left in, and that led police to where they found the suspect and his mother. Jackson was tied up behind the house.

"They said they found him but, with the other witnesses that didn't add up," said Cumberland Police Chief Fred Davidson.

Police later got a warrant to arrest the suspect, 22 year old Joseph Davidson, but now they can't find him.

Davidson told his brother the dog followed him, but Joshua Davidson isn't sure he believes his brother's story.

"He tried to sell it to me, but I knew it was too good to be true," Joshua said.

He says now he doesn't know where his brother is. Browning is thankful to have Jackson home.

Police plan to charge Joseph Davidson with felony theft. If you know where he is, you should call Cumberland Police.

Joseph picks up his little boy every day at about 1 p.m. from the Headstart bus when it stops at the foot of Park Rd., on Kingdom Come Dr. in Cumberland. His whole family, and then some, lives on Park Rd--just follow the trash piles around the first curve. This guy has been in a lot of trouble. It won't do any good to tell the Cumberland Police Dept. any of this--they couldn't find the nose on their face.
