The Kentucky Elk Country Expo is underway in Knott County.

County officials claim the area is the "Elk Capital of The East" and say the animal plays an important role in tourism for the county.
More than 40 vendors are set up at the expo with information on a variety of elk related activities.
You can also find guns, wild game cookbooks, and crafts.

Randy Thompson, Knott County Judge Executive says, “People will pay to do what we do for free and people will come in and spend there money and that's what we want them to do and take advantage of this, we just have a beautiful part of the country.”

The event runs until nine Friday night and is open from eight to five Saturday.

Adult admission is five dollars.

The event is beig held at the Knott County Sportsplex

CRYSTAL, Have you ever taken a grammar or spelling class? If so, did you sleep through it? We can't make people spend their money in Knott County, we can just give them the opportunity to do so by offering events like the Elk Expo and the Trail Ride. Then negative idiots like you make people not want to come here at all. People with your attitude and views are what has kept Knott County in the Dark Ages. Its so good we have new leadership thats bringing a little light and new opportunities to our little county. You need to wake up, you're now in the minority.

I attended the Elk Expo and was really glad I did. There were people from all over in attendance. Crystal needs to get a life and stop criticizing everyone else and try to make life better for herself as well as others...It may not be "big" business yet, but we have to start somewhere...and this seems like a good one. We have to take what we have and try to build on it. If you did not attend, don't sit at home and spew bitterness at the world...Again, I enjoyed the Expo and look forward to a bigger show next time.

You people need a life and most of all find Jesus and he will take all those bitter, resentful, angry, jealous, feelings away from you and you will be filled with love and compassion for your fellow human being. Randy has a wife and children to love and provide for, at least have a little compassion for them, because in October they will be hurt, and you better be careful, the Lord would not like for you to get enjoyment out of other humans sorrows, but he will forgive you for it.

Randy Thompson do you understand what hard times are? Right now i would guess you don't no, does anyone no what bleeding the county is? I beleive that most of our county residents know what that is and what is going on. The more you have, the more you get. Futhermore if anyone comes to this county for anything it's just not going to be hear for them to spend MONEY on, they are going to past Knott Co. up. Perry, Floyd or even Letcher will be their choice to stop and shop, eat and spend MONEY, there are no choices hear in Knott Co. and everone knows this, it doesn't matter what you say to the public, poeple in this county and else were know the truth. O'yell back to hardtimes, around the first of October you will start to find out what HARDTIME is all about.

Who cleans up the elk poop once the Elk expo ends?

Those Elk sure taste good. I had much rather eat one than watch one. Wonder what those tourists would pay for a five pound roast?
