If you want to light up at a Sheldon Clark Cardinals game or on Martin County school property the schools superintendent says there are other places to go. The ordinance is not county-wide.

"We are by no means anti-tobacco in the county, that is not our intentions at all. We simply want our sites to be as clean and outstanding as possible," Martin County Schools Superintendent Mark Blackburn said.

And for those thinking about lighting up anyway do not be surprised if you are asked to put it out.

"If they resist, we are going to escort them off the property, off the school property," Martin County Sheriff Garmon Preece says.

We talked to some Sheldon Clark tailgaters and they are not fans of the ban.

"They have took my rights and twisted them to a point where I can not smoke anywhere on the premises," Mable Sites said.

"I disagree. I think they should have a smoking area the parents. They come out and support the kids so they should have a place to smoke," Sheldon Clark Senior Martika McCoy said.

Asked whether or not a designated area for smokers would happen, Blackburn said it was possible but for now the policy stays as is.

"Simply we are trying to get a healthier community and also make sure our students are able to understand what smoking and tobacco use may do for them in the future" Blackburn said.

I commend the superintendent for this ban. Schools should be smoke free, and I beleive it is no part of the "No Child Left Behind" act. This sets a good example for the kids when they see a smoke free campus with all the anti-smoking education we give kids today. Additionally, it encourages kids to do what is right and not to start smoking.

I agree with the school board on this one. Smoking and children do not go hand in hand. Adult smokers can keep it away from th kids and off school property.

It sounds as though before the ban was passed that students could smoke? No? Or was this done to keep staff workers from smoking on school property? For those complaining about second hand smoke, think about the next greasy, cheesy burger you eat. It's only a matter of time before that will kill you, too. Clogged arteries and smoke-filled lungs. They sound about the same to me--both unhealthy.

Thank you for your report of the smoking ban enacted by Martin County schools. However, I respectfully disagree with your ending comment in which you said you were unable to find any people who favor the ban. While I do not doubt your word, I do know many, many folks in this community favor this ban and see it as a move toward a safer, healthier environment for all of our people. Our school system is right to take a harsh stance against smoking. Our schools should be setting a higher standard and a better example for our children -- I applaud them for taking a stand on this important issue. Despite what the vocal minority may say, smoking is definitely not a "right". As many communities across the state are starting to realize, protecting the public health from the proven killer of second smoke far outweighs the mere inconvenience of a smoking ban. So, in Martin County, many do support the ban and appreciate our leaders taking a stand to protect our health!

I glad that they had enough backbone there to stand up for a healthier school environment. I get tired of having to take a deep breath and hold it until the smoke clears so a smokers "rights" will not be violated. What about my right to clean air? Thank you Martin County School Board.

Nobody has a right to smoke wherever they please. I applaud the Martin county school in enacting this ban and hope it spreads throughout Kentucky.
