The state is cracking down when it comes to its employee's driving habits. Officials with the Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet want to hold state drivers accountable with a new program involving bumper stickers and GPS units.
State officials say they are not happy about last year's accident rate for state drivers. Now they are turning to the public for help by asking a simple question.
If you have hit the road lately, you have probably noticed something different about state vehicles.
“We put the stickers on all of them. It's an attempt to cut down on accidents and instances of reckless driving,” says H.B. Elkins, Public Information Officer for the Department of Highways, District 10.
The Department of Highways is just one of the many state departments that now have "How's My Driving?" bumper stickers on its vehicles. The stickers are an effort by the state to allow the public to keep an eye on its drivers. Last year more than 1,100 state vehicles were involved in accidents.
“It was determined that 70 percent of those accidents were the faults of the state government driver,” says State Finance Secretary Jonathan Miller.
And those accidents were paid for with your tax payer dollars.
“It has cost us over a million dollars to reimburse people for damage,” says Miller.
The state is also installing GPS units to track driving habits, but employees do not know which vehicles have them.
“Oh there's been some laughter about it in the office and saying 'uh oh, I'll have to watch out, big brother's watching,'” said Elkins.
All joking aside, Elkins says District 10 has not had any trouble with bad drivers, but realizes the importance of the program.
“It makes sense for us to try and take care of our equipment to try and cut down on accidents that cost money, the possibility of lost time due to injury, that sort of thing,” he said.
And most importantly, it will help make the roads safer, for everyone.
To report any state vehicle driving complaints, you are asked to call the number on that bumper sticker: 502-564-2727.
