The son of a Southern Kentucky mayor accused in a vote buying scheme pleads guilty.

Brent Madon, the son of Pineville Mayor Bob Madon, entered the plea Thursday afternoon in federal court. Brent was charged along with his father for allegedly conspiring to buy votes with money and drugs in the 2006 election.

Bob and Brent Madon both appeared in federal court Thursday afternoon.

Brent appeared first and plead guilty to conspiracy. That is just one of six counts in an indictment a federal grand jury handed down in July. That indictment was made public in late August and both men were arraigned last month. The indictment accuses the men of using drugs and money to persuade people to vote for Bob Madon in his race for Pineville mayor back in November 2006.

Thursday afternoon, Brent Madon admitted to taking people to make absentee votes in exchange for money.

Bob Madon maintains his innocence and is set for trial in January. He or his attorney would not comment but Brent Madon's attorney did talk with us.

"This was a difficult decision for Brent to enter the guilty plea today but after careful consideration, he is honest and he told the truth and is remorseful for his role in this as he indicated to the court and he'll continue to tell the truth," said Joyce A. Merritt, Brent Madon's attorney.

It is still unclear whether Brent Madon will testify in his father's trial. Brent's attorney says that was not part of the plea agreement but he will testify if he was subpoenaed.

Sentencing for Brent Madon is scheduled for January.

The penality should be the same if you buy a vote or you sell your vote.
