Frankfort, Ky. – A deer hunter in Harlan County fatally shot a black bear with his muzzleloader after the animal came too close to his hunting blind last Saturday morning.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officer Shane Amburgey determined the hunter, 30-year-old Bobby Koger of Cumberland, acted in self-defense due to the proximity of the bear. “He said the bear came right to his blind and almost stuck his head inside when he shot it,” Amburgey said. “We found blood from the bear within a foot of the blind.”

A blind is a type of camouflaged tent used by hunters to conceal themselves from game.
No charges were filed in the case. Another hunter at the scene, 31-year-old James Forester of Cumberland, shot the bear a second time, in an attempt to protect his friend. Investigators found the dead 250-pound male black bear approximately 700-800 yards away. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. Oct. 18 on Black Mountain, located near Gap Branch in northeastern Harlan County.

Wildlife Biologist Steven Dobey, black bear program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, said bears rarely approach people in such a direct manner unless they smell food. Amburgey said Koger did not have food inside the blind with him.

“It is likely this bear was investigating the blind out of pure curiosity,” Dobey said.
Koger told investigators that he initially saw two bears in the clearing that he was hunting. Koger said one of the bears started trotting toward him when he started yelling at Forester, who was asleep at a gas well approximately 50 yards away, according to Koger’s statement.

Koger said he started yelling at the bear, but it did not stop coming. Koger told investigators he shot the bear from 3 feet away. Forester told Amburgey that the bear came back to its feet after the shot and tried to get inside the blind. Forester said he shot the bear and it ran away. The second bear did not approach the hunters.

“The fact that yelling did not deter the bear from approaching the blind suggests it likely did not recognize the concealed hunter as a person,” Dobey said. “Given the location of the incident, however, it is also possible this bear had lost its fear of people.”

Dobey noted that the bear was shot less than a mile from an open dumpster site where bears have been feeding throughout the summer. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officials suspect people have been feeding the bears as well, causing the animals to lose their fear of humans.

“This is a perfect example of how irresponsible actions of people in one area create problems for people in another area,” he said.

Amburgey said the owners of the dumpster have sent letters informing people not to dump their residential garbage into the containers.

It is illegal to feed bears in Kentucky. Wildlife lovers who feed a bear may likely cause the death of that animal.

A couple of years ago I had a young blackbear with an orange tag in it's ear behind my house, of course after I yelled it ran away; it was seen a couple more times by my neighbors. Also this past spring I had a Mother blackbear with 3 cubs in my backyard I guess looking for food for her babies. I'm an outdoorsman and hunter I live in the mountains and have had bears get close to me while in the woods, but have been blessed not to have one attack me. I have been saying something like this was bound to happen with the bear population growing here in Harlan and people feeding them. Those who stated the hunter was wrong, I disagree. Have you ever had a 400-500lb bear charge you? me either, but I know what you or I would do if we had a weapon to defend ourself..It's either you or the bear..I'm sure you would just lay down and say "oh sweet harmless bear eat me" right! I love bears, but not enough to let them eat me..DON'T FEED THE BEARS!!

I love the Monday morning quarterbacks that think they know what happenned out there and say silly things like, "black bears don't attack!" I tell you what, if one comes at you, do what you wish, hoot, holler, wave your arms, whatever, but if one comes at me and doesn't stop when I yell, it's a dead one.

in a world full of animal lovers its really hard to justify an incident such as this one.but wild animals are just that wild, and when your face to face with such an animal all things leave your mind except the will to survive. in my opinion the mans actions were suitable to the situation and im sure any of you would of done the same

For those who think black bears don't bother or attack people, I found these statistics at Wikipedia.com: "This is a list of known fatal bear attacks that occurred in North America by decade in reverse chronological order. Between 1900 and 2003 there were about 52 recorded deaths due to black bears, 50 due to brown bears and 5 due to polar bears." And, I know there have been more black bear attacks since 2003, at least in Tennessee/Smoky Mts. I don't blame these guys, that would be way too close for me too! Because he tried to first scare the bear away, and there was blood so close to the blind, and the killing was reported, I believe the hunters' stories. Imagine if this bear had the chance to attack? The man (or men) could've been killed! What if it had been a defenseless child? It's sad the bear had to die, and I really like animals too, but I believe human lives come first. If there were people feeding the bears, they were more to blame for the death than the hunters.

This same thing happened to my father a few weeks ago during Turkey season. The bear literally poked it's head inside the blind with him. He yelled and threw a hand full of dirt at it and luckily for him it left. It's just a matter of time until someone gets hurt from all these bears they have brought in to this area.

People always seem to forget one thing. They may be cute and cuddly in storybooks, but black bears are still a WILD ANIMAL which can make their actions unpredictable. Blood found by his blind? That should tell you how close the bear was.

black bears don't attack? what kind of stupid pills have you people been taking? And how many of you have had bears on YOUR property? bears are wild animals that need to be respected. Look up how many attacks have been reported in TN. They are not Yogi and Boo Boo!

I am also a hunter and I've seen quite a few bears in the woods. 3 this year already. Sometimes when you yell they run, sometimes they don't. I have had bears so un-afraid of us that they climb in the back of a truck for garbage with us 20 feet away. I have had them bite and give the snapping territorial thing also. A lot of bears here are not afraid of humans. Some of you say they won't attack, I dare you to pop out within close range of one instead of yelling from a distance. Then tell me if you trust them.

As my father would say;"somedays the bear gets you and somedays you get the bear"!

DONT LET IT BOTHER YOU I WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME THING IF IT WOULD HAVE GOT CLOSE TO ME

Now what kind of bear tail is this? sad really sad, black bears don't attack.

I hate that he killed the bear, because i am a hunter, and i would like to get a good start of them. I know some people dont feel the way i do about them. But in his case with the bear being that close i would have prolly done the same thing.

Come on,Black Bears bother no one---they just run when approched by humans, this sounds to me like someone just felt like shooting a bear illegally.
