There is another water crisis in Magoffin County.

The water supply is still low due to the drought and officials say tests show what water they do have is not safe to drink.

When Paula Howard turned on the kitchen faucet, she says the water looked and smelled bad.

The entire Magoffin County water supply is brown.

Officials say it is from leaves decaying in the Licking River.

“It is kind of like the effect of a tea bag. When you take a bag of tea and put it in clear water and just let it soak, it soaks out and discolors the water. That's basically what the leaves are doing right now,” Water Commissioner Paul Howard said.

He says the river's low water level is causing leaves to decay rapidly and that is creating so much bacteria, the treatment plants cannot clean it all, making the water unsafe.

“There's not really much we can do. Mother Nature's not been nice to us this fall,” Howard said.

Everyone must boil the water before using it.

Many started conserving water more than one month ago because of the shortage, now they are stocking up on even more bottled water.

Everyday tasks like brushing teeth or washing dishes take longer.

Water Commissioners do not know how long the dirty water will last, but say the only solution is to get enough rain to get the river flowing again.

Magoffin county officials say as of right now, they do not have anymore donated water to hand out.

The water bans also remain in effect in addition to the boil water advisory.
