We are still a few weeks away from the official start of winter, but the chill is already in the air. We talked to people who work outdoors about how the cold makes for more than just an uncomfortable day on the job.

With some professions the cold weather means bundle up and bear it or take the pay cut.

Robby Hollen says layers are important on these cold days.

“Two sweaters, three long sleeved shirts, a short sleeved shirt, two pair of insulated bottoms, a pair of jeans, toboggan and a hat,” construction worker Robby Hollen said.

After Hollen spent all that time getting ready to work outdoors, the job was called off because of wintry weather. That means no pay check.

“I don't get very many hours through the winter like this. Try to draw unemployment if I can,” Hollen said.

It’s up to the company to determine if it's safe to work.

“When it gets 32 and starts dropping you have to quit. If its 32 and rising you can work,” Walter Newton said.

AEP workers say even in the 30s it can be miserable when you're up high and the wind is blowing.

“It's like being on a mountain top cause you're exposed and you don't have these trees for coverage,” AEP employee Steve Campbell said.

Most say it's better to be cold than broke.

“If you don't work, you don't get paid, so you work when you can,” Newton said.

They also say it’s important to always be aware of your physical limits.

Some workers we spoke with say the best method to keeping warm is moving around so much you actually break a sweat.

Well, well. Yes its cold out side. But I never had a job that wasn't outside,or in a cold wind blown tunnel in a coal mine and I'm still here.No one ever invited me to come in out of the cold or cared how bad it was.Get over it and go to work.
