Would you be willing to pay a toll if that meant improvements to some major eastern Kentucky roadways?

One judge executive is asking Governor Beshear to consider that possibility.

Pike County's Judge-Executive knows this is not the best time to ask Lawmakers for money, but in an effort to gain support to widen and expand two major eastern Kentucky parkways Wayne T. Rutherford says it might be a good time to bring back tolls.

"Yes we need four lanes and I know that they say well the roads are more costly in eastern Kentucky because of the mountains but they already have two lanes," Judge Rutherford said.

Widening a portion of the Mountain Parkway and Hal Rogers Parkway could mean hundreds of jobs and Rutherford says selling turnpike authority bonds could help fund the projects.

"We can bring jobs! Wal-Street has got their problems and they tried to bailout from the top. Why don't they try it with jobs from the bottom in the infrastructure," Judge Rutherford said.

Most people we talked to believe the road projects are needed, but when asked if they would be willing to help pay for it opinions varied.

"As I said I do not like tolls. Nobody else likes to pay. But I will gladly pay if we will get the four lane road," Judge Rutherford said.

The proposal Rutherford sent to Governor Beshear does not mention how much the tolls might be.

Tolls on the Hal Rogers Parkway were lifted in 2003.

The Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway tolls ended west of Campton in 1985 and to the east the following year.

Wayne T. is a idiot, to propose such an idea. He is not even a county judge where the Parkways are located. This is one fellow that needs to be elected out of office.

Unbelievable. For Rutherford to offer suggestions regarding road improvements in any area of Eastern KY, much less those outside of his immediate district, is hypocrisy at its finest. But, we should expect no less from a man whose ego is so inflated that Pike County's existing courthouse cannot contain it. My suggestion is to divert those millions of tax dollars already allocated to build a new Justice Center for Pike County, which I'm certain will contain ample space for a posh new office he intends to occupy, to the proposed upgrades of the parkway. For the voting public of Pike County, let us formally dismiss this man and offer the mahogany desk to someone else.

Please keep your idea of toll roads to your own county please. We the people of Leslie County has paid enough for your nice roads in Pike County and other places. We are the only County who had to pay to get in and get out and never even got 421 upgraded!!

working people have hard enough time of paying bills and buying gas to get to work, much less having to pay to drive on roads that have been paid for for years. all work

The parasitic democrat never give up trying suck us dry.Clean thier clocks they scream.Next we will have tolls on holler rds.Pike County needs to broken up into two counties.Or better yet just give us back to Va,and Pikeville to Floyd Co.=SOON=

Paul Patton had that opportunity and failed, in fact he choose to buid 8 lane roads all over Pikeville and then drive the pony trail from Campton---he's the failure here.

YES. A very good idea if the start-up cost and the on going cost of operation, is contained.

I think this is a really bad idea. People are hurting too much for money now and they want to charge us more. They had the toll on long enough. Maybe Rutherford needs to pay some extra taxes or take a pay cut. If a person isn't working how are they suppose to come up with more money. This is an example of politicians. All they worry about is sticking it to the little man. I sure don't see any of the giving up any of their money. It also seems like they worry more about laws that shouldn't even be brought up. Some things should be left up to the people, not the politicians.

oh yea just what we need, more money for an endless bureaucracy that wont be used the way it should.

I would gladly pay toll if Highway 30 West in Breathitt County was made more safe. It is a dangerous road especially Shoulder Blade Hill. Every time it rains or snows it is an accident waiting to happen. There was millions wasted on Hwy 15 for a couple miles of road when Shoulder blade could have probably been improved for a fraction of the money. Our state Rep Ted Edmonds needs to open his mouth and bring attention to this area. Yes fix the roads and make them safer and I'll gladly pay toll.

no we already paid for those roads once

Good ole liberals they make me sick.

Pike County already has good 4 lane roads, we are taxed to death by school tax, still paying tax on vehicles that are over 10 years old, fuel tax, plus the phone companies stick on several state taxs' 119 between Cumberland and Whitesburg needs to be completed and the money is supposed to be there for that but still it hasn't been done. I'm fed-up with being taxed to death by the politicians we elect that are supposed to help us but only look out for themselves. It's time for some politicians we can trust and are for the people not themselves.

Posted by: Jay Location: KY on Dec 4, 2008 at 06:19 PM
I would gladly pay the tolls. Better than taxing us to death in other areas. At least this way, we know how much we are paying and what it is "supposed" to go towards.

Let the idiots rave. You voted them in now live with them. Hope ye'all is happy pappy's. Give us more coal severance tax. It comes out of our ground anyway. Give it to Pike county instead of Jefferson.

Politicans with TAXES on their mind is like a druggie looking for a pill. You are sick Rutherford.

Judge Rutherford need to keep his nose is Pike County.

Posted by: Carolyn on Dec 4, 2008 at 12:29 PM
Maybe Rutherford and his rich buddies can afford the toll but the average citizen is just getting by-----------have you now truly lost your mind? Do the folks in Fayette County pay tolls for all their nice roads?

Posted by: Willa Location: Pike on Dec 4, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Can't wait for him to run in the next election, this will be the end.

Posted by: broken Location: pike on Dec 4, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Seems like our countRy judge has found a new way to tax us. Vote this guy back into the workforce, next time.

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 4, 2008 at 10:11 AM
we need a four land desperately.

Posted by: Jenny Location: Pike on Dec 4, 2008 at 08:07 AM
Are you stupid? we are already taxed to death.

Posted by: thetanman on Dec 4, 2008 at 08:06 AM
Now its "THREE" things you can be sure of: (1) Death, (2) Taxes, and (3) TOLLS!

Posted by: Me on Dec 4, 2008 at 08:03 AM
Bringing back toll roads would be the worst thing that could happen. The economy is in terrible shape - the economy in Easter Kentucky is worse than almost anywhere else. People can't afford another payment. What we need is Frankfort to cut some spending and fix the roads. Quit taxing people and start cutting fat. Toll roads would only hurt the local economy worse. The Judge said I will gladly pay if I can get 4 the lane road. OF COURSE JUDGE YOU CAN AFFORD TO PAY. WE CAN'T....

Posted by: Theresa Location: Pike on Dec 4, 2008 at 08:00 AM
Rutherford we will vote you out of office.

Posted by: jack Location: Paintsville on Dec 4, 2008 at 06:59 AM
I have one word for Rutherford.....Moron!

Posted by: john q tax payer Location: east ky on Dec 4, 2008 at 06:29 AM
well seems like a good idea, those hundreds of jobs sounds good but as soon as the contractors are finished so are the jobs.Toll road sounds good to make money !problem is the roads in east ky already need work and cant get funding to fix them. The weigh station between p-burg and paintsville is a good idea I have seen it used 3 times since it was finished. How much did that set the taxpayers back?Alright Judge your going to pay the toll fees?not, you will always be on official business and wont have to pay the fees. And how much of the route 80 is 4 lane to Hazard? all of it.The Hal Rogers Parkway goes through a National Forest I wonder if Congress is going to stop everything and sign off on that one just because you to 4 lane and spend taxpayers money!Judge it sounds good in theory but we have better things to worry about.Take the money that would be used for the road project and help our troubled youth, the drugs are killing them, and remember they are our future leaders.

Posted by: Gary Location: Sidney on Dec 4, 2008 at 05:49 AM
I would gladly pay tolls to have all the Mountain Parkway four-laned. We need this road completed.

Posted by: McNealey Location: Pikeville on Dec 4, 2008 at 01:11 AM
I would gladly pay toll for improvement of roads and the economy. I would hope many others that feel the same way.
