Would you be willing to pay a toll if that meant improvements to some major eastern Kentucky roadways?

One judge executive is asking Governor Beshear to consider that possibility.

Pike County's Judge-Executive knows this is not the best time to ask Lawmakers for money, but in an effort to gain support to widen and expand two major eastern Kentucky parkways Wayne T. Rutherford says it might be a good time to bring back tolls.

"Yes we need four lanes and I know that they say well the roads are more costly in eastern Kentucky because of the mountains but they already have two lanes," Judge Rutherford said.

Widening a portion of the Mountain Parkway and Hal Rogers Parkway could mean hundreds of jobs and Rutherford says selling turnpike authority bonds could help fund the projects.

"We can bring jobs! Wal-Street has got their problems and they tried to bailout from the top. Why don't they try it with jobs from the bottom in the infrastructure," Judge Rutherford said.

Most people we talked to believe the road projects are needed, but when asked if they would be willing to help pay for it opinions varied.

"As I said I do not like tolls. Nobody else likes to pay. But I will gladly pay if we will get the four lane road," Judge Rutherford said.

The proposal Rutherford sent to Governor Beshear does not mention how much the tolls might be.

Tolls on the Hal Rogers Parkway were lifted in 2003.

The Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway tolls ended west of Campton in 1985 and to the east the following year.

Wayne T. is a idiot, to propose such an idea. He is not even a county judge where the Parkways are located. This is one fellow that needs to be elected out of office.

Unbelievable. For Rutherford to offer suggestions regarding road improvements in any area of Eastern KY, much less those outside of his immediate district, is hypocrisy at its finest. But, we should expect no less from a man whose ego is so inflated that Pike County's existing courthouse cannot contain it. My suggestion is to divert those millions of tax dollars already allocated to build a new Justice Center for Pike County, which I'm certain will contain ample space for a posh new office he intends to occupy, to the proposed upgrades of the parkway. For the voting public of Pike County, let us formally dismiss this man and offer the mahogany desk to someone else.

Please keep your idea of toll roads to your own county please. We the people of Leslie County has paid enough for your nice roads in Pike County and other places. We are the only County who had to pay to get in and get out and never even got 421 upgraded!!
