The Center for Rural Development and the Appalachian Regional Commission presents nine grants to help improve Southern and Eastern Kentucky communities.

The money goes to strategic planning for economic development, tourism and revitalization projects.

The checks were presented Wednesday during a summit in Hazard.

Bell County received $20,000, which was the biggest amount presented.

"If everyone will come, be involved into this, then it will transcend elections and our community will continue to grow," said Bell County Judge Executive Albey Brock.

Lee, Morgan and Letcher Counties also received grants.

Cities that received checks include Beattyville, Corbin, Mount Vernon, Paintsville and Liberty.
