Many kids headed back to class Monday across eastern Kentucky, but it was an especially difficult day for students at one high school, where three students were involved in a crash over the break that killed one of them.

It was definitely a somber mood at Middlesboro High School, where students and faculty are very concerned about two girls, and remembering another.

The first day back to school made many students realize, their classmate Brooke Lambert would not be returning with them.

“It's really hard, but I'm making it I guess,” Lacresha Glover said.

Students shared memories of Lambert through a song played over the school P.A. system and through collections of pictures, where they could write notes to express how their feelings.

“I'm never going to forget the times we had together,” Glover said.

Students are having trouble believing her young life was cut short so soon.

“She was only 15, she was really young and didn't get to really live her life,” Heather Smith said.

But those who knew her say she lived it well.

“Brooke Lambert was a really good person. She was an amazing girl and I just feel sorry for her family, and I just want everybody to pray for her,” Smith said.

They took time to not only pray for Lambert and her family, but also for the two other girls with Lambert when their car crashed last Tuesday just a few miles from the high school.

Whitney Brock had another hand surgery and is recovering at a Knoxville hospital. Ashley Barger is recovering at home.

Brooke Lambert was laid to rest Saturday.

As for her fellow cheerleaders, school officials say they are giving them as much time as they need to sit on the sidelines until they feel comfortable cheering again.
