One man is in the hospital and another man is in jail after witnesses say the two got into a shootout next to a highway intersection in Pike County.

It happened Monday night in the Shelby Gap community.

Police say William Benjamin Mullins of Jenkins was shot twice.

Denton Houston of Jenkins is charged with assault.

Police are still trying to piece everything together and figure out what led to the shooting.

They do know the two men were arguing and believe both agreed to meet for a gunfight.

Police say the shootout by the highway put other lives in danger.

Neighbors Crystal May and Brenda Hylton are still scared after they say a shootout happened across the street from their apartment at the corner of Highways 805 and 197.

May says she was looking out the window when she saw a truck sitting by the road and another pull up.

Hylton says she did not see anything, but “I just heard four gunshots and then I ducked. I was scared. I didn't know what was happening.”

Police say 42 year old William Benjamin Mullins was shot in the chest and arm. Investigators say he drove away but wrecked around the curve.

Police say 64 year old Denton Houston was not hurt and went home, but he is now in jail.

Investigators believe the two men planned the shooting during an argument.

Detectives are not sure what it was about but believe they agreed to meet at the intersection for a gunfight to settle the argument.

“When you take the law into your own hands and decide to settle vendettas in this nature, you put everyone around you at risk, and there's no excuse for this,” Trooper Mike Goble said.

May and Hylton are thankful they were not hit.

Police say now the courts will decide the men's argument.

Mullins is recovering at the U.K. Medical Center.

Police believe at least two others are involved, but right now Houston is the only one charged.

my parents are good church going people and they consider houston a friend. they even take him tomatoes and veges from their garden, to him and his family, in the summer. we think the world of him. i do pray for both families however, as all family members are hurting not just 2 men. so lets all try to support eachother instead of acting like the hatfield and mccoys. justice will provail and in the end, god is really the only one who can judge. god bless

All I can say is I have known the houstons since I was a young girl and Denton is a fine man and I know he wouldn't have hurt anyone intentionally...I have talked to the family and they are not bragging at all about what happened, they was praying for Ben, they are wonderful ppl. and I am sure both families need support not more drama! It is true the truth always comes out but I do know one thing the Houstons did not start this, if the ksp would have put the man in jail that started this in the first place this would not have happened, and the sad thing is he ended up in jail anyways that same night after the shooting! My prayers are w/both families!

Just wanted everyone to know that whoever posted the comment:by houston did not come from my dad, mom, sister or myself. Like I Said this needs to stop its not helping anyone, I can say on our behalf it has been a nightmare and I can't even begin to guess what it has been like for Ben and his family. As I Said before,Prayers are with Ben and his Family.
