The transition to digital television is on the minds of those who depend on an over the air signal to watch television and for some getting a digital converter box for an analog TV can prove to be a challenge.

Sonja Caudill says it took some time to find her digital converter box.

“I've been to Adair County trying to get it at the Wal-Mart there and they did not have any, they were sold out,” she said.

“There is some supply and demand issue with that. There are some stores running out of the converter boxes. So be sure to get on this right away. If you feel you're going to need a converter box, don't wait any longer,” said Gary White, President and CEO of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association.

Besides supplies, he says as the digital transition draws closer, a new issue has popped up. The U.S. Department of Commerce converter box coupon program is out of money and coupons.

“If you call now and try to get one of those coupons, you're going to be put on a waiting list. And the commerce department is telling us that, we don't know when you'll get it,” he said.

“I got my coupon before they ran out. I've had it like, two, three weeks. So I was lucky to get it,” said Caudill.

White says for shoppers still looking for a coupon, there is still a possibility of getting one, but no guarantee you'll get it before February 17.

“As those coupon dates, expiration passes, and they realize they've not been redeemed, they're issuing more coupons,” said White.

Coupon or no coupon, those getting an over the air signal will need a converter box, new digital TV, or digital receiver, if they do not want to see a fuzzy TV screen February 17.
