The grocery stores were packed Monday night and road crews are already out to try and get ahead of the winter storm. The Kentucky Department of Highways has more than 4,000 tons of salt ready to go in Perry County alone, and now officials say they are just waiting for the winter weather to arrive.

As road crews pre-treat dry roads with a salt brine, many drivers are actually hoping for snow, saying it is easier to handle than ice.

David mcintosh with the Kentucky Department of Highways says, "There's not a whole lot you can do with the ice, we go and do the best that we can with it, but you just got to be careful."

Department of highway officials spent Monday afternoon loading salt trucks. Officials say every truck is ready to hit the road.

"We apply salt and we add liquid calcium which also makes the salt work at a lower temperature," says Scott Combs with the Department of Highways.

Meanwhile, people flocked to the stores for last minute necessities.

"If it's going to be bad, I stock up!" says Jack Longworth. He says he is stocked up on the essentials and ready for the worst, even though he's not sure how much snow and ice the winter storm will bring.

"I don't know, I'm hoping not until I get back home. And if it does, I'll just put another log on the fire and sit by the fire," he says.

No matter what the storm brings, road crews plan to work around the clock through the storm to keep roads safe for other drivers.

Mcintosh says, "The best thing to do if you can stay home, stay home. That's the best thing you can do." He hopes pre-treating roads will make work a little easier for the morning crew.
