Mine Safety and Health Administration officials met with mine operators in Floyd County Thursday to talk about upcoming deadlines in the 2006 Miner Act.
Starting June 15th, mines are required to have a two-way, wireless system that allows communication between underground miners and workers on the surface, in case of an emergency, but operators say that technology is still in the works.
"The technology to be able to communicate underground is still in development, so at this point, I think they're trying to achieve some medium steps on a path to get to fuller communication," said Dennis Hatfield with Booth Energy.
MSHA officials say mines are allowed to use other forms of two-way communication, as long as they are approved.
