Active Road Closures
Numerous roads were closed at the height of the flooding. Now most have re-opened, but some remain closed.

Nearly every road in Floyd and Pike counties was closed either Friday evening or by early Saturday, as heavy rain pelted the region for hours. Three roads in neighboring Knott County - KY 2029, KY 1098, and KY 899 – also were closed through the weekend. Some roads remain closed (see list below).

By Monday afternoon, however, things were clearing up. Highway District 12 crews were on the scene of mudslides, downed trees, and damaged roads as soon as floodwaters receded and it was safe for their heavy equipment to travel the flooded roads.

Motorists are still advised to use caution. “There are still some trouble spots out there,” said Engineer Sam Hale, whose territory includes Pike, Letcher, and Knott counties. “Especially in places where we had embankment failures. Only one lane is open on a number of state roads, so people need to pay close attention. Sometimes the lane that is open changes, so drive carefully.”

FLOYD COUNTY – Roads that are still closed:
KY 302 from mile point 4.2 to mile point 11.6; huge mudslide
KY 194 from mile point 5.4 to mile point 12.1
KY 1086 from mile point 1.5 to 4.5

Engineering Technologist Jerry Lowe said that several roads in southern Floyd County are open but still have some debris in one or more lanes. He encouraged motorists to be alert and drive cautiously.

LETCHER COUNTY – No roads are closed, but the following have trees and debris which have been moved to the shoulder and will have to be removed as soon as crews can get to them:
KY 7 North and South
KY 805
KY 317
KY 931
KY 113

KNOTT COUNTY – Two roads are still closed:
KY 1098 has several slides and roadway breaks; asphalt surface ripped up in several sections
KY 2029 also has slides and breaks, which are being rebuilt with shot rock

MARTIN COUNTY
KY 292 has to be cleaned in numerous places, but is not impassable

PIKE COUNTY
KY 632 at Phelps High School has only one lane open; road has a slip/break in the middle of the pavement
KY 881 has not been worked because crews could not get to it; should be worked on Tuesday, May 12
KY 612 at Turkey Creek is barely passable; much of the roadway has washed off into the river; motorists are advised to stay off this route.
KY 308 at Forest Hills is in about the same shape, if not worse, than KY 612. Again, motorists are advised not to travel this route.
KY 1441 has many embankment failures and is one lane in a lot of places. Drivers should go slowly and carefully; remember that traffic runs two ways on this road and when only one lane is open you could be surprised by oncoming vehicles if you are not driving cautiously.
