Summer vacation is here early for 1,500 Pike County students, many of them flood victims.

Johns Creek Elementary and Belfry Middle School will remain closed the rest of the year because officials say the buildings are not safe for students after flood damage.

School board members say there are too many students involved to try to move them to another school to finish the year.

Many of the students do not have homes after the floods either.

School officials would rather call off the year to help those their families get back on their feet.

Students at Johns Creek Elementary are looking for new clothes after flood destroyed their homes.

Parents say they could not send their children back to class right now.

School officials at Johns Creek and Belfry say they cannot take students now anyways.

Workers cleaned the mud and debris out, but say the buildings are unsafe and unhealthy for students due to damaged to floors, walls, and windows.

“Everything is gone. It's just not possible for them to come back, even if the school was safe,” Johns Creek Principal Kenneth Adkins said.

“Yeah, it makes me feel a whole lot better so you don't have to worry about the kids getting contaminated,” Jeanette Daniels said.

The closing means no CATS tests. Belfry Middle, who lost their booklets, is getting a waiver for no testing.

The CATS tests that were taken at Johns Creek, before the flood, will be scored and the rest waivered.

Teachers are focused on getting student flood victims' lives back on track.

“Anytime you lost instructional time, it does hurt the child, however, right now there are things more important to those children, they've lost their homes, many of them have,” Principal Adkins said.

They will spend their summer vacation starting over.

The superintendent says both schools will undergo construction, renovations, and cleaning all summer to make schools safe again for the next school year.

Even though other areas were flooded, can you say that they were "more" flooded than JCS or BMS. I wouldn't think so. Either way you look at it, it is a sad situation for all involved. I am sure that school officials would excuse any child from school that did get flooded. Do I think it is fair that the other schools in the county have to make up those days...NO! But should they stay out for the rest of the year like JCS or BMS...NO! If the school is able to provide a safe learning environment, they should go back but not make up the days that were missed. I think the original last day should be kept the same. As for Bill, I don't think that BMS is built in a flood prone area. I haven't heard of it getting flooded this bad before. As for JC, I don't have an answer. It has been in that spot for a long time now and it is not unusual for the basement to get "some" water in it after a long, heavy rain. It has been a while since it has had this much water in it.

Too bad the BOE doesn't feel the same way about the children in other parts of the county. Please do not let them fool you into thinking they are closing the schools so the children can "recoup" themselves. They were INTENT on sending back Belfry Middle until the health department failed the inspection of the school. There are other areas such as McCarr, Phelps, Freeburn, Blackberry, and many more who have children who have no homes or clothes but yet, they are expected to be in school WITH make-up days to boot. Pike County BOE, you may pull the wool over some people's eyes but not mine! Get your ducks in a row and do the right thing for these children. We have many, many more kids who need to get their general needs items back. They've lost it all but OOPS, I forgot, the BOE can't afford to NOT to send them to school. It's costing them money!!! PLEASE!!! Voters, you have a choice, please remember this when election time comes around!!!
