People from across the country stop in eastern Kentucky to see how coal ming affects the local economy and environment. The group Witness for Peace got a first hand look from local miners and saw the beauty of some reclaimed mine lands and learned about other environmental effects of coal mining.
Local miner Mike Mullins says, "Before the mines came in there was nothing here, but just a deep valley for nothing."
Avi Chomsky from Massachusetts says, "One of the things that's really shocking to see here is how much work and how much devastation to get to really small amounts of coal."
Several Kentuckians will travel to Columbia in South America next week to study mining and see a 35 mile coal mine, which they say is the largest in the world.

Ky and other states depend on coal, we don't have factories to support this area and other good paying jobs. I'm sick of hearing about how it is going to hurt the hills and save the earth. Some of you people need to think about how these families in this area make a living to survive. I think I would rather see a family be able to eat and put food in there mouth than think about how it is going to hurt the hills. lets think about how families are going to be able to survive. It would not be so bad, if we had other jobs here that was not related to coal, but we don't. I think I would rather see someone out working and making a living rather than my tax paying dollars to pay for them to get unemployment and not work. So think about it, would you rather vote for a family to eat and put food on the table or save a hill? I think a human comes first.
I'm all up for putting all the folks that want to work under ground back to work. However if you all are against hollow fills. you still not going to be happy. deep mine coal has to be washed. The rock, chemicals, and dirty water wind up in an impoundment in a hollow. Like I commented earlier get out of the house folks, look at the hole picture. Also all underground mines are not union mines. I wished there were more union mines around but there are not.
Where are all these help wanted signs, I have not seen any, anywhere that would support a family of four. I have worked with out a lay off since 1995. I am sick of hearing about these other jobs miners can get. where are they, give company names, and places. Say something based on facts not fiction.
