For some senior citizens, it was a chance to get dressed up and cut a rug.

Carl Parrott was surprised when his name was called to be prom king.

“I’ve never been or done nothing like that in my life hardly,” Parrott said.

Senior citizens attended the prom Tuesday morning at the Kings Creek Fire Department near Whitesburg.

Letcher County Judge Executive Jim Ward says it’s important to put on events like this.

“A lot of our seniors weren’t able to go to the prom when they graduated so this gives them a chance to go to the senior prom,” Judge Ward said.

There was also a talent show and kids on a church mission trip from Alabama helped put it together.

“We've never had anything to do with a senior prom like this, senior adult prom and it’s been a very good experience and I know they loved it. We had a great time doing it as well,” Charles Kuykendall said.

The director of the senior citizens center says it all about having fun.

According to Trenda Kincer, their third annual prom was another big success.

All seven senior citizens centers in Letcher County participated in the prom.

Why not let the youth of the county actually serve others and help out in these situations? Why can't our youth do meaningful things? Life is more than selfish fun.

Good for Letcher County. . . Now when are they going to start planning events like that for the YOUNG people? It would be a big plus in helping the youth stay out of the pills if they had some activities. . . Like the old saying: Idle hands are the Devil's playthings.
