"Let's Go 2 Work" Youth Summer Job Fair set for Monday.
Pikeville, KY. - On Monday, June 8, at Pikeville College's Booth Auditorium, area youth between the ages of 16 and 24 can apply for one of 300 full-time summer job openings.
The jobs, which are being offered by the Big Sandy Area Community Action Program (BSACAP) through federal stimulus funding, are 37.5 hour positions located at more than 100 different sites throughout Pike County. The BSACAP open enrollment session being held Monday at Pikeville College will last between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Many exciting, challenging jobs are available through the BSACAP program, including 25 positions working with Habitat for Humanity, 10 positions with the "Paint Pikeville Town" project, and 5 positions to build a park in Coal Run Village. Numerous positions are available within city and county governments, including the Pike County Fiscal Court, the City of Pikeville, Elkhorn City, the City of Coal Run, the Pike County Parks and Recreation Department, the Pike County Solid Waste Department and the Fishtrap Lake Reservoir. Positions are also available with private companies, including Equitable Resources (EQT), Pikeville Medical Center, Tractor Supply Company, Signature Events, Deskins Motors, Bruce Walters Motors, and many more.
BSACAP youth summer jobs are located throughout the county, including the areas of Belfry, Elkhorn City, Phelps, Kimper, Stone and Pikeville.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for young people who may be struggling to find a job right now in the nation's economy," said David Knight, a business service representative with Pike County JobSight.
"I encourage all of the unemployed 18 to 24 year-olds in Pike County to take advantage of this great program that is being offered by the Big Sandy Area Community Action Program," said Pike County Judge/Executive Wayne T. Rutherford.
"Not only are these jobs well-paying, but they are excellent ways to meet people and make contacts within the community that will help these young people in their future careers," he added.
Interested applicants should bring their Social Security card and another form of identification with them when applying for a position. They should also bring proof of household income, proof of disability and/or proof of receiving government assistance.
Early applicants can apply in person at the BSACAP office, located at 478 Town Mountain Road, or by telephone by calling (606) 432-2775.
Another job fair for these young people is Thursday, June 11th from 8-5 at the Office of Employment and Training in Prestonsburg.
Latest Comments
They say they need more kids to participate with the Let's Go to Work program, or they will lose the grants. They are turning college kids away because of income from their parents. With this program giving employers workers that is paid by the program, this makes it hard for other kids to get a summer job. The kids from working families need help also. The System is very broken.

This announcement is miss leading. My 20 year old daughter, has lived on her own for 2 years, attends BSCTC, she supports herself with VA Benefits during school months and summer jobs. She can not find a job on her own and has been turned down from this program due to parent income. This is unfair, and I am sure this is just one of many situations like this. Young adults trying to make in there own are constantly being punished because they come from a working family.

What they did not advertise is that these jobs are based on household income. Just another example of why it doesn't pay to be employed.
