One month ago, we first told you about rising flood waters in parts of eastern Kentucky. We caught up with one family in Jackson that's still cleaning up.
Breathitt County Judge Executive Jason Richardson says there are about 80 FEMA workers helping people get back on their feet, but he says just one month after the flood, there is still a very long way to go.
As the sun set May 8th, flood waters rose across eastern Kentucky. Richardson says, "Chaos, pretty much. Destruction. Just one of the most unbelievable sights me or anyone who lived around here ever seen."
Mud soaked debris still remains in this Breathitt County community. Fast flood waters smashed this car's windshield and filled another with mud. Neighbors say the water lifted trailers off their foundations, and carried some away. Brenda Gross lost her home in the flood and says, "All of a sudden you hear trailers popping, and then you could see them from the other side of the store just coming down this way."
Water got half way up the walls in the Gross' home. Their refrigerator is still in the living room where the flood left it, but they say they've come a long way.
"Compared to the first day of what it looked like, it's leaps and bounds, but there's still a long process, a lot of recovery to do," says Richardson.
Tents where people once lived are now empty, but Richardson says housing is a problem across the county, with a year and a half waiting list on most apartments in Jackson.
Billy Gross says, "We're hoping maybe go to higher ground, but places are hard to find right now, we're still just taking it one day at a time."
After waiting weeks for FEMA's help, Richardson says there are still several families displaced by the flood who have not filed for assistance.
"They just don't want to take away from their neighbor. They don't want to take money that was hit worse than they are. the thing is, there's enough for everybody," says Richardson.
He believes it will take more than a year to fully recover from this flood. So far, 2,600 Kentuckians have filled out applications for assistance from FEMA and they've approved more than six million dollars in federal funding.

Posted by To Joan on 6-9-09 at 12:20... I understand what Joan is saying but I don't think she is talking about the folks who had never been flooded before who don't live in flood prone areas. However now that they have been flooded maybe they will take extra precautions such as raising their house or building a small retaining wall near the creek but I have to agree with her on one point... Help everyone this time, but those who live in a flood prone area should be on their own next time if they don't take some type of precaution.

Joan you just do not understand this flood. I am sick of people constantly saying to not move back to the same location. IT WAS A FLASH FLOOD. It could happen to anyone no matter where they live. Yes, some were in flood prone areas, but the majority were not even located in a flood zone & had NEVER been flooded. People have to live where they can. There is not exactly an over-abundance of places for people to live. We have to take what we have & pray it never happens again. A family member was flooded & lost their home (valued at approx. 175,000) & all the contents and received 30,000 from Fema, which was better than nothing, but we are grateful for it. Their home was not in a flood zone. These people do not need to hear "move to another place"..where exactly would they go? Can you find them some land & purchase their original land that many are still making payments on?

Lets all help them but if they move back to the same location -----next flood they're on their own.
